Wait, How Much Did You Say The Last Of Us Remake Costs?

The Last of Us Part 1 is getting remade for PS5 and PC. Hooray! Finally, we can play as Joel and Ellie on the new generation of consoles. But, it’s also going to cost $70 DOLLARS to buy.  And that is absolutely outrageous, no matter how great the new game is going to look.

The Last of Us Part 1 is one of the greatest games ever made. Period. Its gripping story about the smuggler Joel and his protectee Ellie journeying across post-apocalyptic America, with them coming to grips over the hardship and trauma of their past and eventually bonding a father-daughter relationship is one of the very best told in the video game medium. However, for a remake of the game that came out in 2013 to cost $70 for the standard edition and $100 for the premium edition is ridiculous.

Why? Surely, if the developers at Naughty Dog and the publishers at Sony are charging so much for a near decade old game, they must be adding a trove of new content, DLCs, customizations, etc. Here’s the thing: it’s going to be exactly the same as the original.

Yes, the graphics will be stunning and otherworldly, as most games are with the new advancements in graphical design, but that’s set to be the only change.

Okay, I must be fair to Naughty Dog and Sony by mentioning that the $100 Firefly (premium) edition will have six new weapon skins, a speedrun mode, faster reloading, crafting, and healing times, and a limited edition “Steelbook” display case. They all sound like positive additions but is it really worth $100.

Anyway, what really has me perplexed by Naughty Dog and Sony’s pricing decisions is the apparent lack of new content for the standard edition. That edition has NO NEW FEATURES, according to the Last of Us showcase section on Playstation.com. As long as I was reading it correctly, which I’m sure I was, I saw nothing new being added to justify a $70 opening day cost.

Moreover, I’m not even sure the new standard edition has the Left Behind prequel DLC included. On the Firefly (premium) showcase, it clearly stated the Left Behind prequel DLC, the base game, and all the rest of the new additions that are going to be in the game come Day 1. However, there was no mention of the Left Behind prequel on the standard edition showcase.

Naughty Dog and Sony can’t seriously expect us to pay $70 for a game we have already bought twice in the past and have said game not include all aspects of previously released content.

Despite the lukewarm (which is putting it mildly) reception of the Last of Us 2, the first game is a classic of the gaming world. I’m more than thrilled to be able to play it on PS5 with the awesome, enhanced graphics we saw during the announcement trailer. Still, I think it is a little shady and predatory of Sony and Naughty Dog to be charging so much for a game already released twice and is only a few months away from being a decade old.
