How Will Freya Affect The Story Of God Of War: Ragnorak

God of War (Sony-God of War-Story Trailer)

Ragnarök is upon Kratos and Atreus, but the mythical doomsday may not be their greatest threat. With Freya set to feature in the new God of War: Ragnarök, I’m wondering what her role will be in the story and how will the death of Baldur motivate her goals?

God of War (2018) was an instant success as it was the winner of the Game of the Year award from The Game Awards (in a year Red Dead Redemption 2 was released, no less) and will be remembered as one of the greatest stories told in the video game medium.

The story of Kratos and his son Atreus traversing the mythical lands of Midgard to bury the remains of Kratos’s wife, all the while running from the crazed Baldur and his corrupted Norse-god followers as they try to kill the Greek gods, is a fantastic tale of love, grief, sorrow, regret, and acceptance.

Yet, there was no one more fascinating as a character than Baldur’s mother, Freya the Vanir Goddess.

Her own journey of trying to help Kratos and Atreus achieve their goal, all the while keeping her son from facing the pair is such an emotional, painful story to watch that you feel every ounce of her pain when Kratos is eventually forced to kill Baldur.

In truth, I thought that her final threat to ” rain down every agony, every violation imaginable, upon you… I will parade your cold body from every corner, of every realm, and feed your soul to the vilest filth in Hel, that is my promise!” was the last we were going to see of the Vanir. That would have been a great foreboding sendoff for the character.

Moreover, apart from her help in the story, I didn’t think she served any other purpose to the narrative of Kratos and Atreus than as a reminder of the suffering and pain being that comes with being a god.

Obviously, I was wrong.

As, according to IGN, Freya is one of the characters from God of War (2018), along with Kratos, Atreus, and Mimir, to appear in both games. Now, I have no reason to doubt IGN and their sources, so it is probably assured that Freya will be in the game.

This leaves a major question: what will Freya’s role be in the game?

The only quest/arc I can see Freya going on is a path vengeance against Kratos for killing Baldur. If that is the case, then I could see Freya being involved in the death of Kratos (which I’m predicting we’ll see in this game), which cause Ragnarök to become infinitely worse as Kratos may be on the precipitous of stopping the doom before his death.

Perhaps we will switch over to Atreus as the young Norse/Greek god hunts after Freya, in a similar manner how both Freya and Kratos (in other GOW games) went after their godly rivals, and be forced to choose between a life of vengeance or forgiveness. How tragic would it be for Kratos’ son, despite all of his warnings, follows his father’s own path of vengeance and kills the gods of the Nordic Pantheon.

And what better way to do it than teaming up with Ragnarök and the doom’s destruction of the Asgard and the other realms. I know I’d love to play that story.

Whichever way Freya’s storyline plays out, I’m just glad we’ll be able to see the Vanir Goddess once again. I can’t wait for God of War: Ragnarök and (hopefully) another Game of The Year contender!
