Well, The Trey Lance Era Was Short…

Could Lance’s luck get any worse? After suffering a tragic and unfortunate broken ankle in last week’s game against Seattle, Trey Lance is out as the starting QB of the 49ers as Jimmy G is now back under center…again.

I really do feel bad for Trey Lance. He’s waited over two full years (and a third one if you count his final season of college) to become the starting quarterback of an NFL team.

And, just when HC Kyle Shanahan gave him his chance, he gets his ankle snapped in just his second career game starting under center.

Really, there isn’t a QB in the league with worst luck than Trey Lance at the moment. I, like many others around the NFL, wish him a speedy recovery and I hope he can get back to playing with the 49ers as soon as possible.

However, with Lance going down, that can only mean one thing for the 49ers, GM John Lynch, and HC Kyle Shanahan…Jimmy Garoppolo is the starting QB once again.

After months and months of trade and cut speculation for Garoppolo this past offseason, the 49ers shocked everybody by announcing that they not only were going to keep Jimmy G around, but they also were restructuring his contract to fit it under the salary cap.

Now, I’m sure John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan were just planning on using Garoppolo in a mentor-style role for Lance this season as Garoppolo has played in some of the biggest games any NFL player could image (the Super Bowl, huge division rivalries, NFC Championship Games, etc.), and he mentored under Tom Brady himself during his time in New England.

It really is kind of funny how no matter how desperately Shannahan tries to get rid of Garoppolo, old Jimmy G always manages to find his way back in Shanahan’s offense. It’s almost like these two are intertwined by fate.

Anyway, there are many worse options at the backup QB job than Jimmy Garoppolo as, like I said, he’s won important games. And he’s done so in this San Francisco offense with Shanahan.

Yeah, it’ll probably be very awkward between him and Shannahan for the first few weeks, as Shanahan did replace him with an inexperienced, younger quarterback, but they should be able to get over that hurtle.

They’ve done it before.

And they need to do it fast as the 49ers currently sit 1-1 and have been playing dreadfully on offense until Garoppolo came into the Seattle game.

Hopefully, for all 49ers fans, Jimmy G can replicate some of his past successes this season as the San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl winning window is rapidly closing.
