Morrowind: Almalexia Was Kind Of Right…

The Elder Scroll Online (Bethesda/Zenimax Studios-The Elder Scrolls Online-Clockwork City)

If you think about it, she’s kind of right. Almalexia may be the most despised member of the deceased Morrowind Tribunal, but that doesn’t mean she wasn’t right in trying to kill the Nerevarine during the Tribunal expansion.

Hold on, before anyone freaks out, let me just preface this by saying that if I could have any of the Tribunal members survive and regain their powers, Almalexia would definitely come last. Sotha Sil and Vivec were infinitely better suited to ruling Morrowind and the Dunmer people, though I would probably give the edge to Sotha Sil if I was picking between the two.

The Light of Knowledge was always a more compassionate, intelligent, and reasonable god to work with, and he understood the dangers the Daedric Princes presented to the peoples of Tamerial. But, seeing as these two were either dead or uninterested in regaining their godhood status, I’m stuck with the vain, egotistical Almalexia.

Okay, so why do I think that Almalexia was right to regain her godhood and kill the Neraverine? Well, it is pretty simple: the Oblivion Crisis and the Eruption of Red Mountain.

After the deaths of the three gods of the Tribunal at the end of the 3rd Era, the Daedric Prince Mehrunes Dagon and his hordes of minions attempted to overthrow the Septim dynasty and overrun Tamerial with thousands of dremora.

This huge catastrophe not only led to the deaths of thousands across the various provinces, and Morrowind especially, but also paved the way for the Thalmor to rise out of Alinor and start the First Great War with the newly entrenched Mede Dynasty.

Furthermore, the Eruption of Red Mountian in the early 4th Era doomed all of Vvardenfell, the richest city in all of Morrowind, to be covered by ash and rendered uninhabitable, which would then weaken the authority of the Great Houses of the Dunmer and give way for the Argonians to invade and devastate the southern regions of the province.

In response to the devastation, many Dunmer fled to Skyrim, where they were in turn persecuted by Jarl Ulfric Stormcloack and all of his supporters during the events of Skyrim.

Obviously, the Dunmer had it pretty difficult after the fall of the Tribunal as their place, power, prestige, and standing in the world of Tamriel was devastated, reduced, and shattered into nothing.

However, much of this bloodshed could have been avoided if Almalexia’s plan on reascending into godhood and becoming the ruler of Morrowind again succeeded. Not only would she have been able to thwart off the Daedra and Thalmor’s presence in her homeland, but also might have been able to stop the eruption of Red Mountain.

Yes, the Lady of Mercy was pretty much a lunatic by the point of the Tribunal DLC, but that was because her godhood had vanished and her powers and the reverence of the Dunmer people had gone with it. If she could have regained her powers and the love of the Dunmer, her insanity may have been suppressed.

Of course, the Daedric Prince Azura told the Nerevarine that Almalexia would have betrayed the Dunmer people regardless of if she could have gotten her powers back, but it’s tough to take her word for it. I mean, it’s not like Azura doesn’t have a deep hatred for the Tribunal and attempted to overthrow them at every chance she got.

So, maybe Azura would have been right, and maybe not. We’ll never know.

As for plotting to kill the Nerevarine, that may have been slightly overkill, but he/she was going to try to stop Almalexia as they knew the Lady of Mercy killed Sotha Sil. And seeing that the Nerevarine disappeared shortly before the Oblivion Crisis, he/she wasn’t there to support the Dunmer people in their great time of need as Almalexia most certainly would have been.

So, was it really a great thing for the Dunmer people that the Nerevarine defeated Almalexia? I don’t think so.

Nonetheless, all of my logic as for why Almalexia was right to try to kill the Nerevarine relies on the simple foundational belief that she could have regained her divinity. Who knows if all of her secret, dark magical rituals, artifacts, summons, etc. would have worked?

But it’s still fun to speculate.
