Tales Of The Jedi Is Great…But Just Too Short

Tales of the Jedi Series Premiere (Star Wars/Disney-Tales of the Jedi-Official Trailer)

This show is fantastic, but why have they made each episode so short? The Tales of the Jedi has lived up to my high expectations for it as it has unveiled the little-known backstories of so many beloved characters, even if each episode is a little too short.

This series has everything I loved about the Clone Wars in it. From the memorable characters, the intriguing plots, the heartwarming moments, the witty off-hand remarks, to the very style of animation itself, everything about this series has been great in its six-episode season premiere. Yup, the Tales of the Jedi has released six episodes for its season premiere!

How great, right? Well, like I said, there’s a pretty big catch. Each episode only ranges from 12-18 minutes in length, making it one of the shortest Star Wars projects to come out of the Disney Star Wars to date. Dave Filoni is purposely teasing us with this series format, isn’t he?

How can you give us the backstory to awesome characters like Ashoka Tano, Qui-Gon Jinn, Mace Windu, Anakin Skywalker, Captain Rex, and Count Dooku but only allow us to see it in 12–18-minute bursts? What’s worse is that there is even a storyline surrounding Ahsoka’s journey after the Republic cruiser crash from the last episode of Season 7 of the Clone Wars. Filoni is torturing me by only giving me 16 minutes of post-Clone Wars Ahsoka!

You know, this should be considered emotional abuse to all Star Wars fans.

Anyway, on a more serious note, these episode lengths are way too short. I thought that we would be getting a similar run time and season structure to what the Clone Wars was, which is essentially a 3-episode arc involving a certain group of main characters (usually Anakin, Obi-Wan, Ahsoka, and most times Captain Rex) with each episode spanning in app. 25-30 minutes.

Or, in other words, an hour and a half long short film.

I’m not even sure all of these episodes even add up to an hour, let alone the three hours a normal six-episode burst would have normally provided.

Yet, I guess beggars can’t be choosers when it comes to getting backstory on these great characters. To be honest, I’m just happy that Disney didn’t mess this show up by giving it some strange animation style (which Rebels is guilty of) or be inconsistent with the characters we saw from the Clone Wars (which the Sequel Trilogy is definitely guilty of with the Original Trilogy).

I’m excited to see where Season 2 takes us in the lives and history of these iconic and beloved Jedi. Tales of the Jedi’s Season 1 gets a 9.5/10 from me.
