Man, what a letdown this game is shaping out to be. Rocksteady and PlayStation have unveiled some new gameplay trailers for Suicide Squad: KTJL…and they’re not only extremely underwhelming but also polluted with microtransactions.

It’s kind of hard to believe that this was the company that made the legendary Batman: Arkham series.

I really don’t know where to start with this game. Judging by the trailer shown at the PlayStation State of Play, not only has the expansive, intricate, and rewarding Arkham combat been completely removed, but the open world has also been shrunken down into a highly detailed COD multiplayer map.

In truth, I felt like I was watching a new Fortnite chapter trailer/unveiling as the new combat mechanics (which is entirely gun-orientated, unlike the hand-to-hand/gadget attacks in the Arkham games) felt like a cheap PVP/Battle Royal amalgamation.

There’s nothing wrong with that if the game was advertised as such in the first place, but the very website (I’ve linked it here and down below) dedicated for this game states that it is a “new genre-defying third-person action-adventure shooter videogame”. What I saw didn’t look like an Arkham sequel action-adventure game to me.

And, to top it all off, every single member of the Suicide Squad (i.e.: Harley Quinn, King Shark, Deadshot, and Captain Boomerang) all were showcased wielding some knockoff, handheld gatling gun, even though King Shark, Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, and Deadshot don’t use such weapons in the comics/lore of DC.

I mean, it’s kind of in the name for King SHARK and Captain BOOMERANG that they use their teeth and a boomerang, respectively, for fighting. Plus, when did Harley Quinn become an air-bending machine gunner? Now, she obviously could use a weapon if it is the only thing available, but she’s more known for using a hammer, a handgun, or something of the sort.

Moreover, the hype and focus on the “traversal” mechanics is going to be a make-or-break element of the game.

I don’t really see how Harley Quinn and King Shark jumping around Metropolis like Spiderman is in line with their characters or the DC universe, but maybe Rocksteady will implement a really cool mechanic that’ll make me forget about this oddity. We’ll have to see on this one.

Still, even though the facial animations, character models, voice acting, and cutscenes looked really good, the squad looked like carbon copies of one another when fighting. If these characters were all equally scaled and given zero identifying characteristics (ex: King Shark being a shark, Harley Quinn’s makeup and voice, etc.), I wouldn’t be able to tell them when in gameplay. They literally all fought and moved as if they were the same character.

And that’s a very worrying thing if this game is 75% gameplay and 25% cutscenes (or something to that effect).

Lastly, are all of the levels/missions just going to be the Suicide Squad facing off against dozens of replicate Brainiac bots in order to defeat a massive Brainiac minion? Rocksteady solely showcasing one mission of the Squad mindlessly shooting some giant Brainiac gun was a really poor choice as now I’m doubting if this game has at least 3 unique lesser boss types.

Essentially, the combat and gameplay might very well be a watered down, lifeless copy of Fortnite and Batman: Arkham combined.

Now, as for the thing I’m really worried about: MICROTRANSACTIONS.

The trailer revealed that Suicide Squad will have a Gear Score system for each protagonist’s weapon that’ll determine if you can progress to advance levels and missions. Is Rocksteady serious copying one of the worst things about WOW (World of Warcraft) Wrath?

Anyway, this could become a huge issue if they make gear items microtransactions through their “post-launch support” (or through Toyman) or something similar to how EA made unlocking characters a microtransaction in Star Wars Battlefront II.

I hope that’s not the case, but the way the Rocksteady developers said this game will “continue its legacy of support of the game after its launch” with “new playable characters, new weapons, and new missions” smells like hundreds of hours of content locked behind hundreds of dollars of microtransactions.

I just don’t get why studios continue to hold things behind paywalls when there are countless examples of other studios getting lambasted by their fans for doing so? JUST RELEASE EVERYTHING AT LAUNCH!

It’s not like Rocksteady isn’t charging a king’s ransom for this game in the first place. Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League is currently priced at $70!

I had a lot of hope for this game after the trainwreck that was Gotham Knights, but now I’m almost certain this will be a worse version of Fortnite.

Way to go, Rocksteady, you just damaged your reputation if I’m right about most of this.

PS: Yes, I know the newest trailer was a showcase of the “Co-Op” features, but the devs specifically said the single player experience would operate just like how we saw.
