Oh…That Was Supposed To Be The Marvels Trailer?

That was a really bad sign for how this movie is going to go. The Marvels has finally gotten its first trailer release…and it was disappointing (to say the least) in the wake of all the rumored behind-the-scenes turmoil.

I feel like Marvel has forgotten how to properly build out a superhero cast.

Captain Marvel is finally getting her 4X delayed, 1-year overdue sequel (it was supposed to come out in 2022) with the release of The Marvels this November…though she is going to have to share the screen with two characters, Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau, who have had extremely little audience exposure. So, in essence, this is going to wind up being another dud of a Marvel film.

I seriously think Disney and Marvel have forgotten the key elements that made the original Marvel movies (ex: Phase 1-3) so successful as this trailer was overfilled with the goofy, corny, unwanted, low-level comedy/one-liners that has plagued nearly every single Marvel project since the release of Endgame.

Essentially, from what I gathered in the trailer, The Marvels is going to be about Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambeau teaming up to overcome some lame, unintimidating “world-ending” threat (because we haven’t had enough of those in the MCU) as each person’s powers is uniquely interconnected with the other. Or, in other words, whenever one uses one of their powers, it transports another into the very position they were once it.

I guess it’s kind of like teleporting…just the extremely obnoxious, stupid version of it.

I just don’t understand why each Marvel film has to have some goofy tone to it as it not only degrades the film’s stakes and makes each character a lifeless, humorless shell of themselves, but also was not one of the core principals of the OG movies.

Yes, there was humor in the original films (and sometimes it was a little over-the-top), but movies like The Avengers, Iron Man, Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor, and Captain America: Winter Soldier all took themselves seriously and tried presenting an overarching story audiences would laugh, cry, and be connected to. It still had those classic Marvel one-liners, but they were sparse and done in a tuneful manner.

And, with films like Endgame, Infinity War, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, the emotional connection was cranked up to an eleven as characters died, sacrificed themselves, lost to actual world-ending villains, and/or lost everything they held dear for the greater good.

That’s just not the case with this latest batch of films. And this trailer just proves it.

Who thought it would be a good idea to have Ms. Marvel, a girl 90% of the public has never heard about, and Monica Rambeau, the daughter of Captain Marvel’s best friend and only briefly appeared in WandaVision, co-lead Brie Larson’s, who is a well-known movie star, Captain Marvel’s sequel? These characters have little to none screen recognition, yet they now get to headline a movie with Captain Marvel?

I get Captain Marvel is universally disliked, but she really should get her own movies to flesh out her character and become more likeable.

The original Avengers squad (Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Hulk, and Hawkeye) who had numerous solo films (well for Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man, but Hulk, Hawkeye, and Black Widow played key supporting roles) for audiences to grow and connect with before the mega team-ups.

However, Captain Marvel’s time to grow has been stunted due to the dramatic promotion of Monica Rambeau and Ms. Marvel, while the two latter characters are being fed to the wolves as they don’t have the name recognition yet to headline a major film.

Moreover, why does the tone of this movie feel so nonchalant and goofy? Captain Marvel is supposed to be one of the most serious, heroic, and unstoppable members of the Avengers as she’s been defeating malignant alien forces on various alien worlds, not some buffoon that gets teleported every time she uses her powers.

And how does this teleporting thing even work? How is Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambeau even slightly related?

Sure, they have the similar names (which is entirely the OG Marvel comic book writer’s choice) and Monica Rambeau’s mom was friends with Captain Marvel, but that’s it. As far as I’m aware, there should be nothing that links Ms. Marvel’s magical bracelet, Captain Marvel’s powers, and Monica Rambeau’s powers together to the point they all teleport into one another.

It just doesn’t make any sense why these characters are so deeply interconnected!

Maybe I’m overthinking this trailer and the movie will be a lot better than the trailer is making it out to be, but I’m not getting my hopes up.

This is probably going to be yet another dud in the MCU.
