Secret Invasion Actually Looks Really Good

Finally, Marvel appears to be making a show worthy of its legacy and fans. Marvel has just dropped the official trailer for Secret Invasion…and the series actually looks really good as Nick Fury is set to star in the spy-thriller.

It’s only taken Marvel approximately 20 projects (both movies and TV shows), over 5 years, and hundreds of millions of dollars wasted on poorly received, critical flops to realize they needed a tone shift in the MCU.

Okay, I’m not going to get too excited or hyped up about this movie as we’ve all been burned numerous times in the past half decade by Marvel projects, including those which promised to be “tone-shifting”, “unique” ideas. I mean, there’s a reason why Marvel Phase 4 was one of the worst cinematic failures of a major franchise in film history as numerous projects either lost money or were huge financial flops (ex: The Eternals, Black Widow, Ant Man 3, Shang-Chi, Morbius, Thor 4).

And, on the television front, there must have been more flops than one could shake a stick at as Falcon And The Winter Soldier, Moon Knight, She-Hulk, and Ms. Marvel (I think this show isn’t too bad, but I’ve seen enough bad reviews to list it here) all came out in Phase 4.

Unfortunately, all Marvel fans were force-fed nothing but total garbage (and the occasional oatmeal raisin cookie, such as Spider-Man: Now Way Home, WandaVision, Loki) for the last 1,825 days, so being skeptical about this new series is definitely valid.

With that said, Secret Invasion’s trailer looks really promising as it appears Nick Fury, who everyone thinks is dead, will be teaming up with the CIA, Agent Hill (Cobie Smulders character), Ben Mendelsohn’s Skrull character, Everett Ross (Martin Freeman’s character), Olivia Coleman’s character, Don Cheadle’s War Machine, and Emilia Clarke’s character in an attempt to track down and weed out malignant Skrull characters hiding within the US government.

Like I said, this looks like a great premise and possess some of the best acting talent in the world today as Samuel L. Jackson, Olivia Coleman, Martin Freeman, Emilia Clarke, Ben Mendelsohn, and Don Cheadle will all be taking (hopefully) big parts in this 6-part series, while the gritty, dark, muted tone of the trailer promises a change from the “traditional” Marvel show.

Or, in other words, this show will actually take itself seriously and not be filled with unfunny, humorless quips that serving no purpose than to entertain the town drunk at the local bar and demean the characters taking part in the film. I’m looking at you Thor 4.

Anyway, it’s still way too earlier to tell if this movie will actually be good and not just another lifeless replicant of a series shilled out by the corporate executives over at Disney and Marvel.

Going back to the spy-thriller-like atmosphere of some of the early Marvel films (ex: Captain America: Winter Soldier) is a fantastic idea as even though Marvel has done massive scale, planetary threats very well in the past, I’ve always felt the self-contained movies of the early days were the very best. And, in my humble opinion, Winter Soldier’s mysterious, dangerous, thriller feel was one of the very best movies in the early Phases.

We’ll have to wait and see if Marvel can actually pick up their game and actually make a compelling, intriguing series that doesn’t feature some artificial, unremarkable world-ending disaster the last 15 or so projects have unfortunately featured.
