Even When It Seems This Liverpool Dynasty Is Over, They Still Get Better

You were supposed to destroy the Sith, Darwin Nunes, not join them! Oh, give it up, my inner-Man United fan. I’m sure Darwin Nunez does not want to hear your cries of foul play (and he’s probably an Anakin Skywalker fan anyway, so you’re Star Wars insult doesn’t bother him). Yes, everyone’s probably heard this by now, but I’m saying it again. Darwin Nunez rejects Manchester United to join their arch-rivals Liverpool in an $85M deal.

Okay, putting away my inner-United fan and the Star Wars references, I’ve got to be impartial when talking about Liverpool. And how, even as it seems this great team’s era of dominance was ending, they shock me and go out and sign one of the best young strikers in Europe.

I really thought that Real Madrid’s triumph in the Champions League Final over Liverpool (yet again) was the final nail in the coffin for this team sticking together. And, in a way, I am right. Divock Origi and Sadio Mane are leaving Liverpool after years of constant success. But I didn’t expect Liverpool to be able to replace them with player just as good, only far YOUNGER.

Yes, this Liverpool team is not only staying at the highest level of football, but also doing it while getting younger. It is truly remarkable how competent in transfer business some clubs are (like Liverpool), while others can be just entirely inept (not naming names, but like I said, I am a Manchester United fan).

Darwin Nunez is a fantastic signing for Liverpool. He is a pacey, clinical finisher who had 26 goals in 28 Primeira Liga (Portuguese 1st Division) games for Benfica. Also, he had 6 goals in 10 Champions League games for the Portuguese side.

Instead of replacing the still fantastic, but aging Cristiano Ronaldo at Man United, he will be instead sliding into the vacant Number 9 (Striker) role for Champions League and Premier League runners-up Liverpool.

But Nunez is not all the business done by Liverpool thus far. Nope, less than a month into the 2022 Summer Transfer Window, Liverpool have already signed Fabio Carvalho from Fulham and Calvin Ramsey from Aberdeen. Both players, under 20 years old, are some of the hottest prospects in English and Scottish Football.

Fabio Carvalho, an attacking midfielder from Portugal, tore up the Championship with Fulham last year, scoring 10 goals and adding 8 assists to get Fulham promoted to the Premier League as Champions of the Championship. Meanwhile, Calvin Ramsey, a right back from Scotland, was one of the best young players in Scotland last season, even though his team struggled.

With all of Liverpool’s transfer activity, I can’t help but agree with the saying, “The rich get richer, and the poorer get poorer.” It really is tough being a Manchester United fan these days.
