It is only the natural conclusion to draw. With how Volume 1 played out and how dark Volume 2’s trailer atmosphere was, Stranger Things 4 will see major characters getting killed. But the question is: Who will it be?
I’m really surprised how the show has yet to kill off a major character (Billy withstanding), yet the stakes still seem to be so high each time the Hawkins crew fights off the monsters from the Upside Down. It is a true testament to the genius of the Duffer Brothers.
However, that is going to change 100% in Part 2. An important, fan favorite character is going to be killed off from either Vecna or one of his minions.
Don’t believe me? The Duffer Brothers themselves confirmed to Empire Magazine that the audience should be concerned for the future of the show’s characters. They said, “It’s fun to see people come up with a plan and try to outsmart the villain. That’s what Volume 2 is about. But of course, not everything goes to plan…” (Empire Magazine). Clearly, the group will be making a huge mistake when fighting Vecna, and someone is going to suffer for it.
My bet would be either Steve Harrington, Jonathan Byers, Nancy Wheeler, Robin Buckley, Eddie Munson, and even one of the kids themselves. Yeah, this season’s going to be pretty brutal.
I’m going with either Steve, Nancy, Jonathan, Robin, and/or Eddie as my main choices as their character arcs have little growth left and could be suited with a sacrificial, selfless death fighting off Vecna. Though, Steve and Eddie probably have the highest chances out of the five of dying in Volume 2. Steve has long been the kid’s babysitter and has stood by and protected them from the Demodogs, Billy, and the Mindflayer in the past.
Him giving his life to save the kids once more would cap off one of the best redemption arcs in recent memory.
Eddie, on the other hand, has been a much more recent addition to the cast. However, he has constantly lamented his cowardice by running away while Chrissy was being killed by Vecna. Giving him a cool death scene, perhaps while protecting Dustin (maybe it could be that guitar scene in the trailer), to prove that he is not a coward would definitely cap off his arc in a great way.
Now, as to the kid who I think could be killed, it’ll probably be either Max or Mike/Dustin. Max is the much more likely option as she has already been targeted by Vecna and only barely escaped. I think killing her would not only be an emotional gut punch to the audience, but also to all her friends who have tried to protect her thus far.
It would give an even greater sense of fear and cruelty to Vecna, who has already shown he is not afraid of being ruthless to achieve his goals.
Mike and Dustin are my wildcard choices as to who will be killed off. I choose Dustin because he will be in the most danger as he enters the Upside Down world and could be the person to make a mistake (as he has been constantly called arrogant all season), while Mike could be killed off to evoke a stronger hatred between Eleven and Vecna.
Their rivalry is already strong enough as Vecna has already tried killing El; but, if he kills Mike (Eleven’s boyfriend, no less), that could set El over the edge and on a path of vengeance for Season 5.
(PS: I would have mentioned Joyce, Hopper, and Murray for potential characters getting killed, but I just don’t see these three characters getting back to Hawkins before the end of the season. And, if that is the case, I really don’t see either one of these characters getting killed off in Russia. They’ll be at a much great risk of getting killed off in Season 5)
Anyway, this season has already been the best one since Season 1, and I have no doubt that Volume 2 will be just as good, if not better, than Volume 1. I can’t wait for Volume 2 to drop!
