Okay, The Callisto Protocol was a game that I had no idea was being developed, let alone coming to PS5 this December (December 2, to be exact). What makes this surprise even better was that the game’s “state of play” trailer looked awesome.
The Callisto Protocol is a survival, horror game set on the prison moon Callisto. The main character/protagonist we will be playing as is a guy named Jacob Lee, who is one of the many prisoners being held on the moon. However, some kind of virus outbreak has spread to the prison guards and inmates alike, leaving Jacob (and us) to have to fend for ourselves to escape the doomed prison.
First of all, I must say the graphics of this game looked amazing. The character, environment, monster, and robot graphics looked great, while the gunplay/shooting mechanics looked pretty easy to learn as well. However, what really has me excited for the game is its genre and its story potential.
Being set in the survival, horror genre, this game could feel a lot like the Resident Evil franchise. Or even the COD games while playing in zombie mode. Everybody loves beating up on the Nazi zombies we have to fight in the COD games, so it makes sense that the Striking Distance Studios developers of The Callisto Protocol took some of their designing influence from COD. Plus, taking horror inspiration from Resident Evil is always a good choice.
Nevertheless, the setting of it being an overrun, space prison is just too cool for me to pass up on. I really hope playing this game will make it feel like I’m experiencing the Alien movies in a video game format Although, it’s probably not going to be a Game of The Year contender, the graphics, story, and horror elements should make this game rival Redfall as the best First-Person Shooter game to come out this year.
With this game and Starfield releasing within the next year, the science-fiction, space fantasy genre is going to get a lot of new great content…. I hope.
We need to see more from The Callisto Project (especially more gameplay footage) to get a better estimate as to how the game will hold up. But, for now, all signs are pointing to it being really good.
I’ve embedded the trailer below in case anyone wants to see what I’m talking about:
