Hmph. This really wasn’t the Manchester United transfer news I wanted to see. Cristiano Ronaldo wants to leave United, a year after rejoining, for a new club with Champions League aspirations next season.
This news should not be a shock to anyone. Manchester United were dreadful last year, getting knocked out of the FA Cup and League Cup early, eliminated in Champions League in the Round of 16, finished 6th in the Premier League, and had the club’s worst ever points tally in the Premier League era.
Even worse, United have been painfully slow signing new players this Summer Transfer window. It is really becoming pathetic at this point. You could have kept Cristiano Ronaldo, arguably the greatest ever football player, coming off a horrid season and having no Champions League football next year if you just bought early.
But, of course, United messed that up too. Watching this club flounder in stupidity and mediocrity for ten years straight is getting VERY tiring. I even saw that the Frenkie De Jong deal might fall through as the Barcelona President announced they still want to keep him at their club.
It’s honestly laughable how pathetic Manchester United have become. They do say it’s better to laugh than to cry, so I guess I’ll stick with laughing for now.
Anyway, back to Ronaldo. He wants to leave United to play meaningful Champions League football matches in his last 2-3 years at the peak of club football. Apparently, Napoli, Bayern Munich, and Chelsea (I really hope he doesn’t wind up with them) are all interested in Ronaldo, though United still say they expect Cristiano to finish out his contract.
To be honest, if Ronaldo desperately wants to leave, United should let him go. He has more than earned the right to choose where he wants to play his football, especially when United are concerned. He has been this club’s best player in the 21st Century, and, perhaps, only Wayne Rooney has the talent and accolades to potentially disprove that claim.
Still, I would have really of liked to see Ronaldo finish out his contract at United. I get him wanting to win another Champions League, but what else does he have left to prove? He’s already a 5X Ballon d’Ors recipient, a 6X Champions league title winner, 7X league title winner, and has 15 club cup competitions wins to his name.
I find helping United, the club that “raised him”, get out of their ten-year long title slump is more meaningful than winning a seventh Champions League title with Bayern Munich or Napoli. Well, that is just my opinion, and I am a biased United fan after all. So, I’m probably wrong when saying that.
Regardless, it looks like Ronaldo’s return to Manchester will be cut short as United once again failed to live up to expectations. Here’s hoping the next global superstar (if there is one) that comes from United’s ranks does not find his long-awaited return mired by incompetence and mediocre play.
