Yet another difficult decision for the Emmy voters. I know I have said this for each category I have previewed so far, but this one really feels like the most stacked category of nominees. How the Emmy voters will be able to choose a winner for Outstanding Comedy Series will be beyond me.
Some of the very best comedy shows of the late 2010’s and early 2020’s have all been stacked against one another in the ultimate Emmy battle to see who the best comedy series is. With Ted Lasso (Apple TV+), The Marvelous Ms. Maisel (Amazon Prime Video), What We Do In The Shadows (FX), Barry (HBO), Hacks (HBO), Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO), Abbott Elementary (ABC), and Only Murders In The Building (Hulu) all being nominated, it will truly be a battle of the titans.
Yet, I think only four of these shows have a real chance of coming out of the 2022 Emmy Awards’ night victorious: Ted Lasso, The Marvelous Ms. Maisel, Only Murders In The Building, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Two of these choices should be obvious, with Ted Lasso (2021 Emmy Winner) and the Marvelous Ms. Maisel (2018 Emmy Winner) already clamming Emmy awards in the recent past. Once you win an Emmy, you almost always are considered favorites for another. That is just how voting for the Emmys works, and especially in this category.
Since 1992, there have only been 17 unique winners. So, for those who are not that great with statistics (such as myself), that means there have only been 17 different, winning shows in 30 years. Some shows, like Modern Family, Fraiser, Veep, and 30 Rock have won Outstanding Comedy Series Emmys in three consecutive years or more. That’s unheard of in other categories in the modern era of the Emmys.
So, it is appropriate to label Ted Lasso and the Marvelous Ms. Maisel as the presumed frontrunners, which is a status well-earned. Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Ms. Maisel) and Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso) have been great “leads” in their respective shows, driving each production to well-deserved praise and acclamation.
Anyway, my “Darkhorse” (and much more exciting pick, in my opinion) to win this Emmy is Only Murders In The Building. I cannot stress enough how genius it was for the showrunner, John Hoffman, to pair up Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Steve Martin in a comedy show.
These three were hilarious, entertaining, and just downright fantastic in Only Murders In The Building that I can’t help but root for them when award night comes around. Plus, I think this show has just as good of a chance as Ted Lasso and The Marvelous Ms. Maisel of winning!
Anyway, my last pick, Curb Your Enthusiasm, is more out of sentimentality and nostalgia than faith. I know Larry David has already won an Emmy for Seinfeld back in the 90’s but Curb Your Enthusiasm is his magnum opus. When you think of 2000’s and 2010’s comedy, you think of Larry David and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
I really want Larry to win at least one Emmy for Curb Your Enthusiasm before the show goes off the air.
