She-Hulk: Attorney At Law Episode 3 Is Somehwat Better…But Still Not That Great

Okay, this is a small step in the right direction, but there is still a mile to go, Marvel. She-Hulk: Attorney At Law Episode 3 is probably the best episode out of all the first three, but it’s still not good enough to convince me this show is going anywhere.

First, let me start with the positives from this episode:

The inclusion of the Sorcery Supreme-in-training, everyone’s favorite Sorcerer Wong, was a great idea by the showrunners, writers, and Marvel hierarchy.

This show DESPERATELY needed (and still needs) something or someone that can captivate an audience, and Wong (played by Benedict Wong) is just the guy for that.

His role in the Emil Blonsky parole hearing plot was easily the standout moment of the episode, especially his conversation with Jennifer Walters right before the parole meeting. Unfortunately, he had less than five minutes of screen time as the rest of show was dominated by an obnoxious, dreadfully bad side plot (I’ll get to that later).

The second positive I have is Emil Blonsky himself. Tim Roth is a fantastic actor that can make even some of the most dull, boring, and useless characters entertaining and sympathetic. He really had his work cut out for him with Blonsky, but I think he’s just about managed to make Abomination a somewhat interesting anti-villain.

Finally, I actually liked Megan Thee Stallion’s very brief cameo. Sure, it’s not for everyone, and it definitely shouldn’t be more than a cameo, but I think it worked…mostly. I actually chuckled when Jen Walters said “she kill for Megan Thee Stallion” as I found it funny (and kind of sad) how true her sentiment is with many of Megan’s real-life fans.

If Megan Thee Stallion told one of her superfans to kill someone, I’d guarantee you they’d get the job done in an hour.

Anyways, the twerking scene was really strange to see in a Marvel T.V. show, and I’m still not sure how I feel about that.

I get that’s Megan Thee Stallion’s character/personality, but I don’t think I’d have had Jen Walters twerking along with her if I was the director. But it wasn’t the worst part of this episode, that’s for sure.

Alright, that’s the positives done with, and now onto the negatives.

“Wait, that’s it. That was short list,” you’re probably thinking to yourself. And I would say, yeah, it is.

All of the good progress this episode made with Jen Walters, Emil Blonsky, and Wong was completely wasted because it focused so heavily on THE WORST MARVEL CHARACTERS EVER for nearly half the show!!!

The character of Denis Bukowski is an insult to the creative minds of Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and every other Marvel creator/writer who wrote compelling, believable characters. Denis Bukowski is such an AWFUL caricature of what a real human is that it is really becoming insufferable to watch this show when he’s on the screen.

Yes, I understand that some men can be rude, arrogant, unapologetic, sexists jerks, but Denis is just the epitome of comedically bad writing. How did the showrunners and writers think this version of Denis was funny or realistic?

And if the point was to make an unrealistic caricature, then I have to ask why?

Why ruin your show with bad, unbelievable characters that brings the audience out of the story? Comedies are supposed to be funny parodies of life, not obnoxious amalgamations of unbelievable characters mixed with unfunny plots.

Speaking of unfunny and annoying, the new Light Elf shapeshifter is even worse than Denis. She serves no purpose other than to expose what a moron Denis is, which didn’t need to be exposed any more. His caricature speaks for himself.

And what did she actually do for the story? Jen Walters and her never met, had a conversation, or interacted with her in any meaningful way other than the two of them looked at each other in a court room (if they even did that).

Nevertheless, the most damning negative I have for this episode (and series as a whole) is that it’s incredibly boring. Nothing exciting happens. There are no fights, moral dilemmas, character personalities clashing with one another, or internal conflicts to speak of in this episode or the series as a whole.

In essence, the episode plays out with Jen Walters getting Emil Blonsky out of prison and on parole without any hitches. That’s it.

Simply put, this show is boring.

Sadly, Marvel has all but ruined the character of Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk by giving her a boring plot and bad side characters to work with. Every conflict is resolved with ease, while every single interesting character is a legacy character cameo.

This episode gets a 6.6/10, and that’s being VERY, VERY generous. Don’t expect to keep seeing scores of 6’s from me if this show doesn’t get drastically better with its remaining six episodes. I’ve had it with this show, Marvel. This is bad!

(PS: Where is the fourth wall humor that comic-book She-Hulk is known for? I was expecting this show to be like Deadpool, just a little more PG.)
