The Roy family has triumphed once again. Succession has won its second Emmy for Best Drama series with its win last night at the 2022 Emmys, beating out a multitude of very strong competitors for the title.
I’ve got to say, this probably was one of the most competitive categories of the night. There were at least four nominees that truly had a chance of winning this Emmy. Yet, the voters from the Television Academy decided to award Succession with another win for Best Drama series.
And, to be honest, it was probably the right choice.
HBO’s hit show about Logan Roy, the self-made, media-mogul billionaire, and his explosive, volatile family has been widely adored by millions across the globe. A ‘modern-day Game of Thrones’ is how I would describe it, with some nods to real families and business empires in the world today.
With the overwhelming success of both of these shows, as GOT won 4 of these awards and Succession now has 2, I guess most people just can’t get enough of watching families tear themselves apart in the pursuit of greed, fame, ambition, success, and power.
And I don’t blame them as I love watching it too.
Nevertheless, the show has easily been one of, if not the, best project that HBO has released since Game of Thrones ended. And it is being rightfully rewarded for such excellence.
Yes, I would have liked to see Euphoria (another HBO show, coincidentally), Squid Games (Netflix), Stranger Things (Netflix) win, or even Better Call Saul (AMC) win as they were also just as spectacular as Succession, but maybe they’ll have their opportunity next time they are nominated (aside from Better Call Saul as Season 6 was its last season).
I’m glad that the success of these other shows was highlighted in other categories last night (Euphoria, Squid Games), on other award shows (Squid Games, Stranger Things), and on past and present Creative Emmy award categories (Stranger Things, Squid Games, Euphoria).
Though, I’m also sad that Better Call Saul never won an Emmy in its 6 seasons on air, even though it was nominated 46 TIMES! Come on, Television Academy, you’ve should’ve given it at least one win.
Anyway, Succession was a worthy winner of this year’s Emmy award for Best Drama series, along with its other award wins last night.
