Sunday was a great day for soccer (football, if you’re from anywhere else besides the US) fans. Ted Lasso Season 2 has beaten out some very strong competitors in the Best Comedy series category to win its second Emmy.
This must have been such a tough category for the Television Academy voters to pick from. Every one of the nominees, Ted Lasso, Hacks, Abbott Elementary, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Barry, Only Murders In The Building, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and What We Do In The Shadows, were more than deserving of winning this Emmy.
Each show had such funny characters, riveting plotlines, outlandish bits, and a few wholesome moments that I could have made a case for any one of these shows taking home the Emmy on Sunday.
Yet, as a soccer/football and sports fan, I’m very happy that Ted Lasso won again.
Ted Lasso has so much good for the perception of European Football in the United States that I’m glad it is being recognized for its achievements. Many Americans who are fans of English football/soccer toady can attribute that fandom through watching Ted Lasso, which is one of the highest compliments that show could have asked for.
Yet, I don’t want to take away from the acting, set, cinematography, and plots in Ted Lasso as that is what ultimately won the Best Comedy Series Emmy for this show. In truth, I can’t think of too many other T.V. shows, let alone ones revolving around a sports franchise, that had such memorable, iconic, heartfelt, hilarious, and emotional moments as Ted Lasso has produced these past two seasons.
Watching the journey of Ted Lasso, an American football coach, attempting to keep the lowly AFC Richmond in the English Premier League, while suffering through personal heartbreaks and loss of his own, has been a true joy.
Jason Sudeikis, the actor portraying Ted Lasso and one of the executive producers on the show, should be more than proud of himself for creating such a fantastic, relatable, and heartwarming show in the face of all of the personal struggles he has had in his own life.
Him winning both Best Comedy series and Best Actor in A Comedy series during Sunday’s Emmy award celebration is more than earned. Well done, Jason Sudeikis. You deserve all of the praise and adoration you have received for this show.
