This poor guy really can’t catch a break. With House of the Dragon’s King Viserys getting constantly cut, scratched, and maimed from sitting on the Iron Throne, my question is why? Why is Viserys getting injured while other kings, such as Jaehaerys and Aegon, did not?
I don’t think even the Faceless Men of Braavos can compare to the subtly and deadliness of the Iron Throne. That thing has cut, scrapped, and caused so many infections to Viserys that I’m surprised he’s still alive.
The man has now lost two fingers and has a small, but growing, infection on his back that has been suspiciously not mentioned since the beginning of Episode 1 (in other words, that small back cut has probably turned into a ginormous, black, puss-filled wound) all from sitting on an inanimate chair.
Daemon Targaryen didn’t even get as many wounds as Viserys has from the Iron Throne when he fought the Crabfeeder and his hordes of mercenaries on his suicide run. Obviously, something’s up with the Throne and its seeming distaste for the current king.
But what? And why does it seemingly target Viserys?
Now, there is nothing that says in the A Song of Ice And Fire lore (or at least I couldn’t find anything) that the Iron Throne has any magical elements to it, apart from the fact that it was forged in the heat of dragon fire.
But, considering how good kings, such as Aegon and Jaehaerys were not cut while sitting on the Throne, while bad kings, such as Viserys, have been, that leads me to believe that the Iron Throne itself is a sentient being.
Or, in the very least, is able to determine who is deserving and underserving of sitting on the throne by “attacking” the undeserving kings.
Why else would some kings (who happened to be good) not get hurt while on the throne, while other kings (who happened to be bad) do?
Yet, what I don’t understand with this theory is how did the Iron Throne obtain this power? It is only made of two “ingredients” (for the lack of a better word): the regular swords of Aegon the Conqueror’s enemies and Balerion the Black Dread’s flames.
Neither of these elements should be able to turn the Throne into a conscious object with the ability to determine who should and should not sit on it.
So, that leads me to its creator: King Aegon Targaryen I.
He must have had something to do with this phenomenon, right? Well, I’m actually not so sure he did.
Aegon the Conqueror was never described as a “sorcerer” or a person who could wield magic/curses, so I don’t think he would have been able to imbue the Iron Throne to reject unworthy people by slowly killing them. He was a general and a warrior, not a magic wielder (apart from riding a dragon, of course).
The only person who was rumored to be a sorcerer/magic wielder during the time of the Throne’s construction was Aegon’s sister, Queen Visenya Targaryen. Maybe she was the one who cursed the throne so that only “worthy” heirs could sit on it.
This theory would make sense considering she wanted her son, Maegor Targaryen, to be the next king, rather than Aegon’s firstborn son, the weak and indecisive Aenys Targaryen.
Nevertheless, if this theory ends up being correct, A) That’s kind of creepy how the Iron Throne has that power, B) That should be extremely worrying for Viserys and the rest of the future kings/queens on this show as if they are deemed unworthy, they will have a grisly, painful life.
Oh, and just one last theory before you go, if Daemon was able to sit on the Iron Throne without getting injured (as he did when we first saw him in Episode 1), does that mean he is actually the rightful heir to the Iron Throne and not Rhaenyra or Prince Aegon?
