How did he pull that off? Baker Mayfield literally walked onto the Rams roster two days ago after getting cut by the Carolina Panthers and has now just pulled off a 13-point comeback against the Raiders!
It’s pretty wild how good Mayfield was last night when he literally (and I mean literally) arrived in the Rams training facility two days ago. What he did should have been impossible for a quarterback who spent two months learning the Sean McVay system, let alone someone who had less than 48 hours.
Now I know he and Mcvay have spent a little time with one another a few years ago during Mayfield’s draft combine but being able to pick up a brand-new system in just two days is extremely impressive.
I still have my reservations about Mayfield’s true ceiling (I still believe he is at best a competent backup in this league), but his performance last night should raise some eyebrows in the NFL world.
At the very least, he should be getting some job offers this offseason if he continues to play like he did last night for LA.
Completing 25/38 passes for 230 yards and 1 TD, Mayfield proved that he not only isn’t as bad as some people in the media have made him out to be (cough…Shannon Sharpe…cough), but that he also has the leadership qualities necessary to be the quarterback of an NFL team.
Sure, he wasn’t off the charts great as he was only able to manage 3 points for the first 55ish minutes of that game, but when the game required a spark of hope, Mayfield stepped up as the Rams’ match.
Like so many have done to the Raiders this season, Mayfield picked apart Las Vegas dreadful secondary for two touchdown drives in the 4th Quarter to overcome the Raiders 13-point lead to win the game on practically the final play.
In my opinion, that final drive where Mayfield took the ball 98-yards showed that he is talented enough to win football games in this league in highly pressurized moments. Yes, it was only against the Raiders and that dumpster fire of an organization at the moment, but you can only beat who is in front of you.
Abd that’s something Baker hasn’t been doing of late, so it was nice to see him finally get to celebrate with his new teammates.
Nevertheless, it’s obvious that once this season is over, Mayfield will be a free agent again (even if he plays lights out football) as Matthew Stafford is the heart and soul of this Rams franchise.
I just hope he’s plays well enough down the stretch to get another chance at a quarterback job.
