This is not what Disney or Marvel wants to see from its core audience. Ant-Man Quantumania has seemingly suffered from the same Phase 4 fog that all Marvel films have endured, and the general audience on IMDb is actively telling Marvel this with their reviews.
Now, I can’t speak for myself on how the movie is as I’ve yet to see it…but I can tell you what the critics and the general public is thinking.
If you look at any of the major review websites, you’ll see that Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has not been the unanimous success that the previous movies were. In fact, it’s pretty much a minefield of conflicting opinions about this movie.
On Rotten Tomatoes, over 200 critics have destroyed this film as it currently stands at 48%, though the general audience has rated it an impressive 86% on the very same website. Normally, I would be inclined to believe what the general audience has to say, but the fact that the 86% tally has been calculated with less than 100 scores make me question if they are accurate.
I mean, the majority of the written reviews just say, “THIS IS THE BETS MOVIE EVER” or “THIS MOVIE SUCKS”, or, worst of all, the simple, bland “great editing” and “great visuals” type of reviews. I can’t tell if the reviews have been bombed by bots, trolls, fanatics, or a mixture of all three, which really wouldn’t surprise me at this point.
Anyway, I think IMDb has a much more accurate portrayal of how this movie has settled with the general public.
As of me writing this article, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (which might be the longest movie title in history) has a 6.6/10 rating amongst all demographics in a 7,500+ poll, a 6.5/10 rating amongst men, and a 6.7/10 rating amongst women. So, in other words, it’s a rather average movie that has failed to break the Phase 4 fog that has engulfed Marvel and the MCU for the last 4-5 years (ever since the end of the Infinity War saga).
Obviously, a 6.6/10 rating is not a bad score by any means, but when you see that Ant-Man (2015) had a 7.3/10 IMDb rating and an 85% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes, and Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) had a 7.0/10 IMDb rating and an 80% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s clear that either the Ant-Man franchise or Marvel itself is getting a little repetitive and stale with the public.
And, seeing how only four (Spider-Man: No Way Home, WandaVision, Hawkeye, and Loki) of Marvel’s 18 Phase 4 projects (both movies and T.V. shows) have scored above an 7.5/10 on IMDb (which was a regular occurrence for Marvel projects in the last three phases), I think we all have our answer.
That’s all I can really give you for insight into this movie as of right now without seeing it, but unless these rating go up drastically, Marvel has yet another “dud” (by its lofty standards) movie on its hands.
