Has Netflix seriously not learned a thing from the humiliating failure of Witcher: Blood Origin? A reliable Witcher insider source has revealed that Netflix is planning on releasing another Witcher prequal show, despite the main show not even having three seasons released yet.
It’s honestly ridiculous how bad Netflix has treated and handled The Witcher franchise.
Like I said, despite the flagship show having yet to release its third season (which happens to be the last time we’ll see Henry Cavil as the famed Geralt of Rivia) and the historic failure of the last Witcher prequel show, Netflix is pumping out another prequel show that is obviously doomed to fail. So, what’s this new show going to be about?
The Rats.
For any non-book readers, you’re probably wondering, “Who in God’s name are The Rats? Is that some kind of tacky 2000’s metal band?” And that would have been a pretty good guess under normal circumstances, but that’s not the right answer in this case.
No, The Rats are actually a very important group in the character development of Ciri in books 3-5 as they are actually a group of thieves who saved Ciri from the Korath Desert and Nilfgaardian bounty hunters after the Coup of Thanedd. During her time with The Rats, Ciri is both comforted and assaulted by members of the group as she learns how to rob, liar, kill, steal, and be an overall more cynical, ruthless person in a cruel, unforgiving world.
Also, like I said, Ciri is also abused (you know what I’m talking about) routinely by members of the group and forms a sort of Stockholm Syndrome relationship with one of the members named Mistle. Quite an impactful group, right?
So, in other words, this is a pivotal group to focus a T.V. show on if Redanian Intelligence, the insider group I was talking about, has gotten their sources and information correct. Rather, they would have been pivotal if The Witcher show hadn’t already cut them out of the story by circumstance.
By having Ciri get possessed by the female, knock-off Gaunter O’Dimm and slaying nearly all the Witchers in Kaer Morhen, ruining the mother-daughter relationship between Yennefer and Ciri, pushing back the journey and then the Coup of Thanedd until the 3rd season (at the very earliest), and having Ciri’s relationship with Vesemir and the rest of the Witcher ruined, the show has completely changed the impact of this group.
Ciri should already be a more cynical, cold character after getting literally possessed by a demon and then forced to murder innocent Witchers in their own beds, leaving the role of The Rats to be completely unnecessary. That should make even the most naive and positive of people a little more reserved and careful.
Moreover, Ciri doesn’t have to learn how to kill, lie, steal, and cheat her way through life if she’s already proven her magical powers by summoning the monsters in the Battle of Kaer Morhen and teleported to the Wild Hunt’s homeland in the final scenes of Season 2.
Living with The Rats was supposed to prepare Ciri for her dealings with Vilgefortz, the Wild Hunt, Eredin, and the rest of the evils of The Continent trying to steal her powers that should be unbeknown to her. That’s the whole point of forcing Ciri to learn and grow from being with such jaded characters, which she would never have learned staying under the protection of Geralt and Yennefer.
Anyway, another reason why this show sounds awful is by the way Netflix has supposedly described the plot: “Six teenage thieves must rely on their criminal skills as they plan the biggest heist of their careers against the most dangerous crime ring in the kingdom.”
Could you get any more generic and blander than that? Seriously, I feel like that’s the plot a 12-year-old would have come up with after playing through the Skyrim Thieves Guild questline.
Thankfully, none of this has been confirmed by Netflix yet, so maybe they’ll smarten up and dedicate their resources towards making the flagship series as good as it can possibly be.
