This is a big maybe, but that line was such a massive hint as for what’s to come. The Ahsoka series just got its first trailer yet…and one small line of dialogue might have hinted at Disney finally correcting its biggest mistake.
Hold the back page, hold the front page! Disney has smashed the record…for how many times its screwed up the Star Wars universe. But it might have just saved its own skin with this series.
I’ll put aside the 2015 Leicester City references for now as I have to get this out: the Expanded Universe might not be dead after all. With just a single line of dialogue, Ahsoka might have just saved Disney’s Star Wars project as it seems very, very, very likely that the legendary, highly praised Grand Admiral Thrawn Expanded Universe trilogy might be getting adapted into this series. And we all have Star Wars: Rebels to thank for that.
Okay, I’ll take a step back and explain just a little bit for people who either haven’t seen the trailer yet or don’t know what line I’m talking about.
Obviously, this new series will be all about Ahsoka’s adventures after the events of the OG Trilogy and her appearances in Star Wars: Rebels as it seems not only will the Ghost crew be making their live-action appearance in their search for Ezra Bridger, but Ahsoka will also be hunting down the main villain of Rebels…Grand Admiral Thrawn.
Now, I can’t be too certain about anything regarding the Ghost crew finding Ezra (though it seemed highly likely in that Sabine Wren scene with a hologram image of Ezra), but I know for a fact that Thrawn will be making a grand appearance fit only for a Grand Admiral in this series. Why? Well, aside from the fact that Thrawn was teased in the very trailer itself, but Ahsoka has now said she is looking for Thrawn in two separate Star Wars projects.
The first time came in The Mandalorian Season 2 when she faced off against the magistrate of Corvus, and this trailer was the second time.
Nevertheless, before I get into why I’m SUPER EXCITED about this series, let me just say that Rosario Dawson as a live-action version of Ahsoka was one of the best casting choices Disney has made for the franchise. Even with the small glimpses we’ve seen of Ahsoka, Dawson has portrayed so much elegance, class, agility, and mastery of the force that an older, wiser, and more experienced Ahsoka would have.
Moreover, every single one of the Rebels characters shown in the trailer, such as Sabine, Chopper, Hera Syndulla, Grand Admiral Thrawn (well, the back of his head), and obviously Ahsoka herself, looked FANTASTIC in their live-action versions. I don’t know who did the costume, make-up, and character designs in this series, but it already looks to be the best since the Prequel Trilogy.
Also, the darker, ominous tone, setting, and lighting also looked great as even though the New Republic is alive and well during this timeline, the galaxy still has some major threats in the form of Thrawn’s Imperial remnants and some other creatures (i.e.: their name rhythms with tong) that the resurrection of the Expanded Universe could spell.
Anyway, as for the reason why I’m so excited about this trailer, the simple line of dialogue at the 1:03 of the trailer nearly knocked me out of my seat. Ahsoka said, and I quote, “I started hearing whispers…about Thrawn’s return…as heir to the Empire.” Yes, you are reading that right, the words “heir to the Empire” were muttered in a live-action Star Wars show trailer.
If that isn’t a hint that the Expanded Universe has been lifted from its grave and put on the center stage of Star Wars, then I don’t know what Disney were thinking with such a provocative quote. The very title to the first book in Timothy Zahn’s 1991 Thrawn trilogy is “Heir to the Empire”, which has Thrawn returning from a deep galaxy deployment and trying to rebuild the Empire.
Obviously, the book isn’t going to be adapted 1:1 as it not only predated every single idea from the Disney era of Star Wars (essentially, everything after 2012), but it also predated the creation of the Prequel Trilogy (1999) and The Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) television series as well.
So, if this actually is an adaption of the trilogy, then most of the OG characters (ex: Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Lando Calrissian, etc.) will be replaced with the Ghost crew characters, Ahsoka, and some of the Clone Wars (Huyang, who also made a grand return) and Disney characters. At least for now.
Nevertheless, if some of the mysterious characters shown in the trailer are who I think they are (Ivanna Sakhno’s character who looks a lot like a certain Mara Jade) and the same plot points, then this show will finally correct the massive mistake of killing the Expanded Universe.
There are dozens of movie-trilogy worthy concepts, idea, characters, and story arcs woven into the universe as Geroge Lucas gave direct permission for all of those authors to write quality spinoff novels after the events of the Original Trilogiy. The Heir to the Empire trilogy is just one of those ideas.
Thus, if this show is an adaptation of the Heir of the Empire, it will be the greatest Star Wars show to date.
Yes, I’m even including The Clone Wars and Andor.
PS: Before I forget, it was nice to see Genevieve O’Reilly’s Mon Mothma back on out screens.
