I don’t know why, but I’m getting a feeling this could be really special. Despite having a highly questionable lead actor and years of production delays, The Flash is shaping out to be one of the best DC movies in the last ten years!
I really hope this is the movie that sends the DCEU off in style.
The Flash just had its second (and perhaps final) trailer release a few days ago, and I have to say that the movie looks fantastic. I’m probably going to be 100% wrong and this film will be yet another bland, tasteless, mind-numbingly stupid movie that has dominated the DCEU, but this film just has something about it.
Maybe I’m being blinded by my love for the Michael Keaton Batman and his films, Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne (he’s still one of the best Bruce Waynes, even though the movies he’s in suck) or the return of General Zod to the big screen, but the latest The Flash trailer has me really pumped for this film.
In the brief moments we’ve seen of Keaton’s Batman, he was his usually badass self as the classic gadgets (ex: the Bat-Glider, the OG Batsuit) and machines (ex: the Batwing) looked fantastic with the new CGI and practical effects. Moreover, Ben Affleck’s Batman looked almost as cool as Keaton’s as he looks set to have a key role in stopping whatever the Flash has unleashed upon his timeline, while Michael Shannon’s General Zod obviously is his intimidating, ruthless, and awesome self too.
I know these characters are going to be great.
Who has me the most intrigued is actually Sasha Calle’s Supergirl.
I don’t know if the writers are taking inspiration from the Red Daughter of Krypton comic arc, but this version of Supergirl has a lot of the characteristics and vibe of that one. In the Red Daughter arc, Supergirl deals a lot with the anger, rage, sadness, and loss that has plagued her since her battles with a Cyborg version of Superman, leaving her to be a far more bitter, ruthless, and aggressive person than her usual characterization.
Aside from the choice of having her with black hair (which I’m not totally against, but don’t really understand), this version of Supergirl seems a lot like that one as she just seems very angry, distraught, mistrusting, and flat out lost in the few clips we’ve seen so far as the Red Daughter one. Now, this probably isn’t the way I’d introduce Supergirl to the larger audience, but I hope she gets a lot of screen time and character development.
Because if she is done properly, this could be one of the best, most compelling superhero portrayals of all time. And especially so if she has to take on the Superman role after General Zod either defeated/killed Superman, which seems to be the case in some of the clips (I swear that’s a dead Henry Cavil Superman in her arms at 1:49-51 at of the trailer).
As for the plot, it appears that Barry Allen has seriously messed up the DCEU/Keaton Batman timeline/timelines and has caused utter chaos by trying to save his parents from death. I’ve got no idea what he possibly could have done by saving his parents to mess up the timeline so badly that General Zod, who was killed by Superman in the DCEU timeline, was spared and has now been ruthlessly destroying Earth as we know it, but it looks really cool.
Obviously, this movie is setting up the Flash to reset the timeline by creating a Flashpoint (an event that ends one timeline and starts another) to introduce the Gunn DC universe, so I hope we actually see some brutal, ruthless deaths of these beloved superheroes. I know that sounds rather bloodthirsty, but I don’t know how else to make this movie have tension if the heroes don’t meet an untimely end to save the universe as they know it.
Also, I hope to God that Ezra Miller and his Barry Allen are not written in the usual, obnoxious way that has dominated the character’s characterization in the DCEU as that will doom this movie, even if everything else is great.
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how good this movie is until it comes out on June 16th.
