This is going to be one of the greatest games of all-time, isn’t it? The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom just had its longest, most impactful trailer release yet as the game looks set to be one of the greatest video games of all-time!
Just as Link has never failed Zelda, Nintendo shall not fail us (well, in terms of a game being good).
Nintendo has just released its third (and probably final) trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and it looked utterly incredible. Now, that really shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise as Nintendo, despite being a morally abhorrent company towards its own fanbase, is probably the greatest and most consistent video game developer in the world today.
This company is simply allergic to releasing crap games as the studio occupies at least three of the Top-10 greatest video game lists by publishers like IGN, Metacritic, Time Magazine, Games Radar, Business Insider, and Polygon, while IGN, Polygon, Games Radar, Times Magazine, and Business Insider have at least four Nintendo games appearing in their Top-10 list.
That’s 40% of the 10 greatest games of all-time according to these publications!
And, do you know what appeared in at least the Top-3 on every single list? Of course, it was the Legend of Zelda franchise.
Whether it was the classic The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (ranked 3rd on Time Magazine, 1st on Business Insider, and 1st on Metacritic), the 1987 OG The Legend of Zelda game (ranked 3rd on Polygon), or the recent masterpiece The Legend of Zelda: The Breath of the Wild (ranked 3rd on Games Radar, ranked 1st on IGN), The Legend of Zelda series really does have no completion when it comes to the greatness of its games.
There’s not a single franchise that I saw rank more highly than Zelda on these lists in the entire history of the video game industry, which includes Red Dead Redemption, Halo, Dark Souls, Portal, Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, Sonic the Hedgehog, Assassins’ Creed, The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Final Fantasy, Mortal Kombat, Total War, Battlefield, God of War, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Batman, Civilization, Pac-Man, FIFA, The Sims, Uncharted, Kingdom of Hearts, Mass Effect, and even Super Mario Bros.
It’s very tough for me not to say this is the greatest ever video game franchise. And that’s why I don’t have any doubts or concerns about this game.
The developers behind The Legend of Zelda, led by OG developers Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, have consistently revolutionized the open-world genre through these games since the original The Legend of Zelda game released in 1987, and I have absolutely no reason to doubt they’ll stop doing it now.
Tears of the Kingdom’s trailer had all of the classic music, characters, monsters, villains, locations, etc., while also adding in a bunch of new ones that has me beyond excited for this game. In fact, the music alone would have convinced me to buy this game as I don’t think there’s a better OST in video game history than the ones featured in The Legend of Zelda games.
Sure, the trailer was a little vague (well, more than a little) about the story as all I could gather was that Link and The Master Sword will be the “last line of defense” against what looks like Ganondorf, but I don’t know what that entails or how Zelda, who said “I know why I am here. It’s something only I can do”, fits into the narrative.
Moreover, I’ve got no idea where this story falls on the iconic Zelda timeline, but I’m guessing it’s a sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom as it seems like we’ll still be with the same Link and Zelda in the Kingdom of Hyrule. So that’s obvious a new feature as most of the Zelda games are different incarnations of Link and Zelda, while we usually travel to brand new places.
Regardless, whether we’re in Hyrule again or New Jersey for that matter, I’m going to be playing this game as it’s almost certainly the 2023 Game of the Year heir apparent.
