This very well could be the Best Picture in waiting. Christopher Nolan’s latest classic-in-waiting, Oppenheimer, looks like it’s going to be one of the best movies of the year with the movie telling the story of the most consequential moment in the last 100 years of human existence.
There really isn’t much more of a headliner grabber than a Christopher Nolan movie, packed with some of the most famous movie stars (ex: Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Cillian Murphy, Gary Oldman, Florence Pugh, Emily Blunt, Rami Malek, etc.) in the world, about the creation of the atom bomb and its infamous creator, J. Robert Oppenheimer.
The Oppenheimer biopic just had a new trailer released, and it looks absolutely sensational as legendary director Christopher Nolan seems to have truly mastered the gravity, nuance, secrecy, and complexities of the times Oppenheimer, the United States, Europe, and the world itself was suffering with a raging World War II and the famous (and infamous in many ways) Manhattan Project just getting started.
So, it must be the Best Picture in-waiting, right?
Well, I guess we have to wait for all of the award and greatness talk but let me first praise Nolan for tackling one of the most consequential moments in US and world history with a movie that takes the subject matter seriously.
For those who don’t know what I’m talking about, the world as we know it was essentially in the balance as Nazi Germany under the hideous leadership of Adolf Hitler was not only taking over all of Europe and on the verge of completing the conquest of the Soviet Union, but they also had their brightest nuclear scientists working on a weapon that would permanently tip the balances as Western Allied Powers (aka: the US, UK, Free French Government, Canada, Australia) were preparing to enter the war on the West Front: the atomic bomb.
In other words, the world and democracy were in big trouble as the Nazis were only a few months/years away from developing what has turned out to be the most devastating weapon in human history. However, even though the Nazis had their greatest German scientist working on the bomb, they left out a few due their archaic and frankly abhorrent treatment of the Jewish people.
Scientists, such as the legendary Albert Einstein, fled to the US and told the US government all about the Nazis’ plans, and the vitalness of developing the atomic bomb before Hitler could get his corrosive hands on it first. So, who could the US count upon for such a task: J. Robert Oppenheimer.
Obviously, since we’re not all speaking German and saluting Hitler’s stupid mustache, the US won the race, but I don’t want to spoil into the details of how the US won the race. Instead, I’ll prematurely praise Cillian Murphy for embodying Oppenheimer, even though I haven’t seen a minute of his performance yet.
Just from the trailer alone, Murphy has completely adopted Oppenheimer’s small frame and stature, while the few lines of dialogue I’ve seen appears to be in line with Oppenheimer’s personality. Moreover, the CGI, costumes, and general acting from the trailer alone looks unreal, but that’s usual the case for all movies and T.V. shows. Trailers are used to attract people to see the films they’re about.
We’ll have to wait until July 21st to see this masterpiece, but this is going to be fantastic. It’s Christopher Nolan, after all!
