That’s how you do a gameplay trailer. Sony is pulling out all the stops for Spider-Man 2 as the new gameplay trailer revealed brand new combat features, interesting gliding mechanics, and a symbiotic Spider-Man suit.
I really hope this game will live up to its 2018 predecessor as it has all the hype and new features to do so.
Sony has unveiled the newest gameplay trailer for Spider-Man 2 at the 2023 PlayStation Showcase, and it was one of the best trailers shown at the even with the Spider-Man sequel revealing some really interesting new features that should make this one of the better superhero games. And that really is saying a lot.
The 2018 Spider-Man game was one of the most interesting, fascinating, compelling, and just flat out enjoyable games I’ve ever played as it allowed us to take the reins of Peter Parker and explore an open-world Manhattan at will, leaving very little room for criticism or complaints due to a lack of creativity or poor storytelling.
In fact, I’d say the story to Spider-Man was one of the best of all games in 2018 as it gave a refreshing take on Spider-Man and his relationship with the evil Dr. Octopus, Aunt May, Mary Jane, and the rest of the usual Spider-Man cast that hasn’t been seen in most Spider-Man movies.
Oh, and obviously I loved the Arkham-like combat that Spider-Man 1 had as we could glid from roof-top to roof-top, shoot out spider webs and climb nearly any building at will, take down dozens of enemies with unique web-based attack combos, and assembled the coolest spider suits imaginable.
So, it’s no surprise the game received both critical and audience praise as it was nominated for numerous Game of the Year awards in 2018 (including the Game of the Year award), a 10/10 on Steam from gamers, a 9.2/10 on IMDb, an 8.7/10 on IGN, and an 8.7/10 on Metacritic.
And, judging from the 10 minutes of gameplay footage, that’s exactly what we’re going to get again in Spider-Man 2…with a few major upgrades.

I’m not entirely sure what the entire story is going to be as the game is still a while away before releasing (Fall 2023), but the brief YouTube description and the events shown in the trailer says that the Spider-Men, Peter Parker and Miles Morales, will be fighting against Kraven the Hunter to keep Dr. Curt Connors (aka: The Lizard) safe from the maniacal hunter’s grasps.
Sounds pretty interesting, though a little too vague before I can make a judgement on it. I’m not the biggest Kraven fan as I always found he was one of the least interesting Spider-Man antagonists in the comics, but maybe Sony can do something special with him in this game. Only time will tell.
Anyways, what really excited me from the gameplay trailer was three things: 1. the new gliding features, 2. the ability to switch between Parker and Morales, 3. Peter Parker’s symbiotic Spider-Man.
The original game had a few gilding mechanics, but they weren’t nearly as in-depth as the gameplay trailer showed for Spider-Man 2 as this new game will see Morales and Parker gliding huge distances, using wind tunnels to propel themselves, and a built-in glider to keep them upright. It’s a lot like Batman’s Bat-Glider in Arkham.
As for the switching between Spider-Mans, I’m not entirely sure how it’s going to be introduced as the trailer just focused on a single mission. It would appear that you can switch back and forth between Parker and Morales whenever you want, whether that be during missions or just free roaming, but I can’t be 100% sure. Still, the ability to switch between the two best Spider-Mans is something I’m really excited about.
And do I really need to explain why the symbiotic Spider-Man suit is awesome? Just watch the trailer and you’ll see how awesome Peter Parker looks in the suit, and how his symbiotic abilities alone might very well make this game better than the original.
We’ll have to wait for another trailer to get an even more in-depth look at this game and how it’s going to function, but I have high hopes for it.
