This is like a gaming soap opera. The ongoing legal battles and litigation between Microsoft and the FTC over the gaming giant’s $70B Activision Blizzard purchase has shown how chaotic and frankly pitiful Microsoft’s leadership truly is.
You’d think the leadership at a company like Microsoft would be proud, confident, and a little arrogant, yet they all sound like a bunch of depressed teenager girls who just lost a beauty pageant to their high school bully.
The Microsoft vs. FTC battle over the future of the gaming giant’s purchase of Activision Blizzard has unrevealed so many ugly, rotten, and downright pitiful sides to Microsoft leaderships as it’s been revealed the company lives in constant fear of Sony and PlayStation, they have tried to buy up nearly every studio in the gaming industry to prevent Sony from doing likewise, and that they believe the Xbox console has ALREADY LOST the console wars to PlayStation.
So, in other words, Microsoft executives believe they’re screwed and there’s no hope for the company.
I really don’t know how a company that generates practically more money than God himself, has global reach, is based in America and has a direct connection to the America populace, and is a legacy brand as its founding dates all the way back to 1975 can be SO SCARED of another company to the point its practically given up hopes of competing.
And, furthermore, I can’t believe said company I’m talking about is MICROSOFT!
There has to be MONUMENTAL leadership changes over at Xbox as this FTC hearing/litigation/battle has shown that the people running Microsoft Gaming and Xbox not only have failed miserably in competing with Sony, but now they are also giving up the hopes of competing in favor of just buying out the gaming industry.
Phil Spencer, the CEO of Microsoft Gaming, and Microsoft themselves said in this process that the company “has lost the Console Wars” as “Xbox’s console has consistently ranked third (of three) behind PlayStation and Nintendo in sales”, Microsoft only bought Bethesda because they were afraid of Starfield being a PlayStation exclusive as “Sony had been negotiating timed exclusivity on Starfield”, Microsoft wanted to buy Znyga to expand their mobile game portfolio, and the Indiana Jones game was heading to both consoles before “the agreement with Disney was amended to transition the Indiana Jones game to an Xbox and PC exclusive.”
Can you believe that?
And that’s just a quarter of the blockbuster news to come out of the first few days of the hearings thus far. If you want an extremely detailed accounting of the quotes and revelations at this hearing, I’ve linked an IGN article here and down below so you can see everything Spencer and Microsoft employees have said.
Anyways, these quotes and developments I’ve laid out shows how inept, scared, and monopolistic Microsoft have become in recent times as instead of trying to hire competent, genius, and skilled employees to improve the Xbox console and studio games, they’ve just decided to buy out the entire market to ensure Xbox forcefully stays in all of our homes.
I just don’t understand how a company with so many resources, skilled laborers, and genius creators at their disposal have such a depressed, dour, and defeatist attitude over the state of their company.
Sure, the recent launches of the Xbox and Xbox-affiliated games have not been great, but the Xbox console and brand is still one of the most iconic, legendary consoles/brands in the history of gaming and is still one of the TOP-3 consoles in the world.
Now, PlayStation and Nintendo might be ahead of them right now, but that can easily be fixed with magnificent Xbox studio and affiliate studio releases or revolutionary console ideas/designs. I mean, do the heads of Microsoft Gaming really expect their consoles to dominate the market when the only new things they release are paint jobs, storage allocations, and build them out of old rockets parts?
Seriously, the Xbox Series X looks like they took a trip to NASA and decided to build the console out of the spare Apollo-11 parts!
Now, I personally think Sony and every single game console publisher should be BANNED from signing exclusive agreements with independent studios if they have no involvement in the development of the games as the practice is a silent, corrosive monopoly of the gaming market that forces companies like Microsoft to overtly buy up all non-signed independent developers.
Still, if the leadership of Microsoft is so scared of Sony and Nintendo, then they have to either resign or be fired for people who are willing to dare and dream through creativity and ingenuity, not greed and bully-pulpit tactics.
I actually like Phil Spencer and I think he’s a nice guy, but his disastrous leadership over Microsoft Games and Xbox shows he’s simply not fit for the job.
