Netflix’s Quarterback Is Such A GREAT Concept

Netflix's Quarterback Is Such A GREAT Concept (Netflix-Quarterback-Official Trailer)

Who would have thought Netflix could make something good. Netflix has recently released the first trailer for their new, unique series, Quarterback, which followed the lives of Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, Vikings QB Kirk Cousins, and Falcons QB Marcus Mariota during the 2022 NFL season.

Netflix made a fascinating, compelling series that isn’t weighed down by overly ambitious, arrogant writers or cheap CGI? Are we living in dreamland?

Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for Quarterback, their newest sports series that saw three film crews follow the lives, both personal and professional, of Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, Minnesota Vikings QB Kirk Cousins, and Atlanta Falcons QB Marcus Mariota during the 2022 NFL season. And, as you probably could guess, I love the concept of this idea.

I know a lot of “traditional Netflix users” (if that’s even a thing) won’t watch this series as they either don’t care for any of these athletes, don’t care for the teams, don’t care about the NFL or the sport of football, or find these “behind-the-scenes” shows unsatisfying to watch, and I understand that.

If I wasn’t a huge football fan, I wouldn’t watch this show either as the trailer suggests its just about a camera crews following around three different guys going about their, respective, everyday life.
Of course, said guys are three of the most prolific, talented football athletes in the world as all of them were the starting QBs for 1 of the 32 NFL teams last year, while they also all play the most poplar sport in North America. So, I guess it’s not as simple as I made it out to be, but you get the idea.

Nevertheless, I think its a great idea showcasing three of the most common career paths QBs take during their NFL careers: superstardom, reliable veteran, or being a journeyman QB trying to live from one job to the next.

I don’t know if Netflix did this QB “class system” contrast on purpose or they just couldn’t afford bringing on Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts, and Patrick Mahomes on one show, but it really is genius to give us football viewers an insight into the everyday life of the different type of QBs.

Obviously, with Patrick Mahomes winning the NFL MVP, Super Bowl MVP, and the Super Bowl itself with the KC Chiefs last season (which may or may not be covered in this documentary), his lifestyle should be the flashiest, fanciest, and “more interesting” of the three as he’s the face of the NFL.

So, seeing how Mahomes navigates being the most fearsome, dangerous NFL athlete in the world with hundreds of sponsorship opportunities coming his way, crowds of adoring fans (and haters from rival fanbases), the NFL marketing his name everywhere, and the other 31 teams all gunning for his head, yet still be a present, compassionate father and husband should be really enjoyable.

Similarly, Kirk Cousins’, who is a great QB in his own right, life should be interesting to explore as even though he’s one of the most famous athletes working out of the state of Minnesota right now, he’s comes across as a very humble, reserved, and family-orientated father.

That is, when he’s not on team planes wearing 100k chains around his neck after the Vikings win a game.

Anyways, its going to be compelling watching how Cousins dissects defenses in film sessions, manages his low-profile lifestyle, and the highs and lows of being a “reliable veteran” QB for one of the 32 NFL franchise.

Last but not least, Marcus Mariota’s 2022 journey might be the most interesting as his career has been a rollercoaster since being picked 2nd overall by the Tennessee Titans all the way back in 2015.

Having bounced around the league from the Titans (2015-19), Raiders (2020-21), and now the Falcons (2022), it’s going to be fascinating watching how Mariota prepares for games no longer having a secured starting role, deals with the pressures of being a former 2nd round pick now on his 3rd team, and the assurance that he will be replaced at the drop of a dime if he has a poor run of starts.

In truth, I think I’m going to enjoy watching Mariota’s journey the most as he has the most to lose out of all three quarterbacks, while still having the pressure of being a 2nd overall pick lingering over his head and career.

But all these stories are going to be great to watch, and I’m glad Netflix is taking a break from their usual garbage lineup to show them.
