The remake of the greatest Star Wars game hasn’t faced its own Order 66 demise just yet. Embracer Group, the Swedish game publisher in charge of Knights of the Old Republic, has made it clear in their Q4 financial report that the Star Wars: KOTOR remake is still in active development.
I don’t think there’s been greater news than this in the Star Wars gaming community in years.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) is still getting its highly anticipated remake despite nearly two years of silence on the project as Embracer Group, the publisher in charge of developing the game, has listed its development as active on their Q4 financial end of the year report. And, you don’t need me to tell you that is FANTASTIC news.
I was most definitely not the only Star Wars: KOTOR fan who nearly jumped for joy when they first saw the Darth Revan standing ominously and imperiously in the dark midst in the remake announcement trailer. That brief, 1-minute or so highlight of Revan was the best moment of the entire PlayStation 2021 showcase for me as it put to be the rumors that a KOTOR remake would never be made.
Even though the game is about to turn 20-years old this July, the game is still one of the Top-3 best Star Wars games to have ever been developed and is my second favorite Star Wars game (it’s a close second behind Star Wars: Empire At War).
Though, just like Empire At War, the Knights of the Old Republic is practically from the ancient days in the gaming world and doesn’t even run on most computers or consoles. So, KOTOR being remade for the newest generation of PlayStation consoles and PCs was a dream come true for myself and many Star Wars fans…until the game’s development went completely dark.
Ever since that September 9th, 2021 trailer release date, the game has gone through development hell as the game not only has not had any updates or trailers since this time, but the very developing studio, Aspyr, originally tasked with making this game was either removed from the project or voluntarily left (I’m not sure if it’s been clearly stated what the reason was) since that trailer was released. That’s not a great look.
Still, what had me and probably the vast majority of the Star Wars community concerned was the fact this game went radio silent as that’s generally a sign Lucasfilm is moving on from the project.
I mean, just look at all of the announced projects and then never talked about again under the Disney reign, such as EA’s Battlefield 3, the Rian Johnson trilogy, the Dumb and Dumber (Dan Weiss and David Benioff) trilogy, Paddy Jenkins Rouge Squadron, both James Mangold and Josh Trank’s Boba Fett movie, Star Wars 1313, the Star Wars: Republic Commando Sequel, the Star Wars: Force Unleashed sequel, etc., and then never talked about again under the Disney reign.
That’s a long, comprehensive list of would-be projects completely axed by Disney.
Thus, when this KOTOR remake also went quiet for nearly two years, I thought it had met a similar, grizzly fate.
But thank the force that has not happened as Embracer Group definitely and concretely has plans to remake the Knights of the Old Republic as their own internal studio is set to take the reigns on development, while an announcement trailer at the 20th anniversary celebration in July seems very likely.
I hope I’m right with this prediction as there’s not a Star Wars fan alive who wouldn’t want to see this game remade for the new consoles and PCs.
