I’m really exited for this game. Star Wars Outlaws had its first reveal and gameplay trailer shown at the 2023 Xbox and Ubisoft Showcases, and the game looks fantastic so long as Ubisoft doesn’t mess it up royally.
This might be the first Star Wars game I’m actually really excited about since…well, the cancelled Star Wars 1313 project.
It appears Ubisoft have finally stepped up their game and have made a fresh, unique video game again as the gameplay and reveal trailer for Star Wars Outlaws showed off an extremely detailed, fresh open-world adventure completely unique in the Star Wars gaming franchise. And, so long as Ubisoft doesn’t mess this up, the game could be one of the best SW games ever made.
Okay, I’m probably hyping this title up a little too much given this is a Star Wars game and its being made by Ubisoft, two factors that really haven’t been helpful in the development of video games these last few years, but the gameplay and reveal trailers were really good.
I was expecting this game to look like yet another cookie-cutter Star Wars “adventure” game that features some single-player experiences, but really only plays into multiplayer modes and microtransactional content. Essentially, another Battlefield 2 but the Ubisoft version of it
And, to be honest, its not like that opinion was totally wrong as Ubisoft simply haven’t had the best of luck these last few years…to put it mildly. Whether its failing to meet revenue projections, the cancellation of in-development games, the failure of established franchises, or sexual misconduct allegations in the workplace, Ubisoft’s place as one of the premier video game publishers in the gaming world has taken a big hit.
Yet, thankfully, it seems like the company has finally found its footing with this game.
Sure, the combat, leveling, and quest designs seemed to be a little basic in the 10 minutes of gameplay footage, while Kay Vess and the other supporting characters have not had enough screen time to make a notable impression on us yet, but it seems Ubisoft are actually making a Star Wars game in the broad mold of an Assassins Creed title.
With the stealth footage shown, various open-world planets to explore, an interactive dialogue system mixed in with predetermined cutscenes, and the ability to fight and interact with Vess’ ship, Star Wars Outlaws seems like it will actually give players a fun, interesting, and compelling open-world, single player adventure the Star Wars video game genre has been clamoring out for years.
Personally, I really liked the smooth transition between roaming around on Jaunta’s Hope and then entering Vess’ ship, while the space battle with the Empire was a really cool showcase of the ship and space mechanics as well.
I’m getting a feeling the game might have a little “hold your hand” feeling to it with the quest objectives blaring out at you in the top right hand corner of the screen and area zones (ex: restricted zone, enemies alerted zone, etc.) also right your face, but hopefully the missions/quests will be in addition to the open world exploration.
Or, in other words, I hope the game is more like Red Dead Redemption 2’s mission system or Assassins’ Creed rather than a game like Battlefront 2.
I wish I could add more to this game, but there’s just not a lot of information out there about it aside from these newest trailers.
So, I’m cautiously optimistic Ubisoft has gotten it right this times and has made a fantastic game in Star Wars Outlaws.
