I’m glad to see this epic game get released on the new generations of consoles. Rockstar are finally pushing out Red Dead Redemption 1 to the new console generations as they’ve announced RDR1 is heading to the Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PS5.
It’s about damn time, Rockstar!
Despite coming out over 13 years ago and being one of the most beloved games of all-time, Red Dead Redemption is just now getting modern ports to the newest consoles by Rockstar as they’ve agreed to have the game be playable on the Nintendo Switch and the newest PlayStation consoles. And, even though it has taken a long time, I’m more than happy the game is finally able to be played on the next-gen consoles.
Okay, my title is SLIGHTLY misleading as avid Red Dead Redemption 1 fans were able to play the game on of the new Xbox consoles as the 2010 Xbox 360 version having backwards compatibility patches for the Xbox One and the Xbox Series X since 2016. Yet, given how Xbox themselves have stated that they lost the Console Wars, and they are only the third wheels in the massive market, not everyone has been able to play the game on the latest console editions.
And that goes double for PlayStation and Nintendo users.
The original 2010 release of RDR1 was only designed for the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 and only Xbox users were able to play the game on newer consoles through the backwards compatibility, but PlayStation gamers haven’t been able to jump back into John Marston’s shoes and take on Bill Williamson, Javier Escuella, Dutch Vander Linde, and the US government in his quest to save his family in over 13 years if they moved on from their PS3s!
And Nintendo Switcher users have been flat out of luck entirely as they not only weren’t able to play Red Dead Redemption 1 on their Switches (given how the Switch came out in 2017), but they also haven’t been able to play any version of the Red Dead Redemption franchise at all given the games were primarily made for Xbox, PlayStation, and PC platforms.
Nevertheless, that now changes completely as both the base game and Undead Nightmare are being ported by Double Eleven, a game studio appointed by Rockstar to port the game, to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 through backwards compatibility and to the Nintendo Switch.
I’m not entirely sure if the game is going to be remastered (I hope) or remade (that’s not my first choice for the game, but if done right, it could be good) by Double Eleven for either platform, but just having the game on the later versions of the PlayStation and Nintendo Switch is enough for fans such as myself to be happy with. I mean, Rockstar really didn’t have to approve this port at all…and I’m positive they haven’t in the past when these latest consoles were originally releasing.
Still, what I find a little funny is how PC, the largest sector of gaming in the world by a country mile (1.83B people own at least one PC game and machine), got completely snubbed by Rockstar AGAIN for a Red Dead Redemption 1 port.
After nearly fifteen years beyond its release, you’d think Rockstar would have made a RDR1 port for PC gamers, yet this latest announcement leaves out any hope or possibility of a PC port. And this is really strange not only because of how LARGE the PC gamer market is, but also due to the fact Red Dead Redemption 2, the game sequel to RDR1…obviously (but it’s the chronological prequel), had a PC port a year after its October 2018 release.
I don’t know if Rockstar or John Marston himself has it out for PC gamers, but at least PlayStation 4 & 5 and the Switch gamers will finally be able to suit up in that classic cowboy hat and roam the great plains of New Austin on August 17th.
