This is really not how you should promote a film. The Marvels director, Nia DaCosta, has made some pretty disconcerting comments about the state of the film and how it ties into the MCU, which has me really nervous about this film’s general impact.
Why does Marvel keep hiring these people who openly say they have no idea what the franchise is about.
Despite containing the most powerful and probably significant character remaining in the MCU, The Marvels seems like it’s a ticking time bomb ready to explode as director Nia DaCosta has openly said she doesn’t know what the MCU is even about. And, to be honest, I think that’s a horrible sign for this film’s impact on the franchise.
Now, I may be making a mountain out of a molehill with this article as the movie has yet to be released and I’ve haven’t seen a single film Nia DaCosta has done to prove she is a good or bad director, yet her comments to Vanity Fair makes it sound like she doesn’t even know who Tony Stark or Steve Rodgers are.
I mean, maybe you guys have a different opinion on this matter, but does DaCosta saying, “The overarching narrative is secondary to the narrative of the individual film,”, “Sometimes you’d be in a scene and you’d be like, ‘What the hell does any of this shit mean?’”, and “I think superhero fatigue absolutely exists…The biggest difference from the other MCU movies to date is that [‘The Marvels’ is] really wacky, and silly. The worlds we go to in this movie are worlds unlike others you’ve seen in the MCU. Bright worlds that you haven’t seen before.”
Now, aside from the part about superhero fatigue, which is debatable given how good superhero movies of late still make well over $800M+ at the box office, everything else she said makes it sound like she really doesn’t know the whole point of the MCU Phase 5 or how to counter-correct the MCU given the notion that “superhero fatigue” has kicked in by her own estimations.
I mean, I get being overwhelmed by huge CGI spectacles and having to imagine alien worlds and creatures rather than working with live action props, sets, costumes, or people in make-up (which really sounds like a Marvel being miserly problem than anything else), but to say, “What the hell does any of this shit mean?” makes it sound like he she has no idea what her own movie and the characters/cultures within in are even about.
Again, this could be chalked down to tongue-and-cheek humor, but with the constant rewrites, delays, and rumors of on-set issues, I have my doubts whether Nia DaCosta is this “acclaimed nerd” as Vanity Fair keep mentioning. But still, what I have a bigger concern about is how DaCosta said this Marvel movie was going to be unlike anything we’ve seen before because it is “really wacky, and silly” and “The worlds we go to in this movie are worlds unlike others you’ve seen in the MCU. Bright worlds that you haven’t seen before.”
Has she literally not watched a single Guardians of the Galaxy movie, or the better part of the Phase 4 and 5 MCU films, or any of the DCEU movies? Every one of those superhero movies have “really wacky and silly” moments/characters and “bright worlds that you haven’t seen before.”
Again, her comments make me question if she really understands what the issues have been with MCU films in the last three years, or why the MCU is failing to resonate with audiences like it did from 2008-2019. How is The Marvels going to be any different and end “superhero fatigue” if it literally is playing into the same tropes that have caused it over the last few years?
Marvel doesn’t need ANOTHER slapstick, The Three Stooges-esque humor with a bland, generic plot solely reliant on massive, bright, garbage CGI spectacles to compel audiences to see the film, but rather a grounded, character-driven tale to reinvest audiences into the characters.
Maybe I’ll be proven wrong, and The Marvels will be successful, but I highly doubt it given these comments and other things that this movie has had gone wrong during its production.
