Okay, I know she’s really popular and talented, but she isn’t the best thing since sliced bread. Taylor Swift and her “Era’s Tour” theater-release has just been overshadowed in just its second weekend with Killer of the Flower Moon earning more from the box office this weekend.
Taylor Swift is great and all, but do we need her to be CONSTANTLY shoved down our throats?
Despite being MASSIVELY marketed and hyped up to an almost god-like level, Taylor Swift’s Era Tour movie was beaten by Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, and Leonardo DiCaprio’s C-tier Killers of the Flower Moon in the international box office this past weekend. And, even though Taylor Swift deserves all the success coming her way, I hope this shows all her promoters and these media outlets that she doesn’t need to be hyped up as if she’s the second coming.
Alright, to give credit where credit is due, I got this idea to write this article from Variety’s piece on it. If you want a more educated, balanced take on this issue, I implore you to go read the article (I linked it here and down below) as it is a great read.
Anyway, back to my article here, if you guys didn’t already know, Taylor Swift is hotter than the sun itself right now as she’s completely taken the media, entertainment, and sports worlds by storm with her Eras Tour, the movie about her Eras Tour, and her romance with the Kansas City Chiefs reigning Super Bowl champion TE Travis Kelce.
Whether you’re booking concert tickets at your local stadium, browsing your local theater’s movie offerings, or watching your local NFL team come up against the Chiefs, you’re going to see Taylor Swift. A LOT!
Now, I don’t want to sound like some hater or grumpy hermit as I’m not…well, I’m not a hater. The grumpy hermit claim has yet to be verified LOL. But, seriously, what Taylor Swift has been able to do in her career is most definitely impressive and she’s more than deserving of her incredible, almost unbelievable success.
Yet, these box office stats show how the Taylor Swift mania is getting a little too crazy. Even for the media outlets and empires.
Despite having Martin Scorsese as the director and Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro as the lead actors, Killer of the Flower Moon is a small, little-know, award-baiting, critical darling Hollywood movie that only diehard DiCaprio, 1970s-90s mob movie fans, and pompous Hollywood critics and actors will go watch. I’ve got nothing against the movie (it’s alright), but it’s just not on the level of Scorses, De Niro, and Dicaprio’s past successes.
And yet this movie STILL managed to outsell Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour by nearly $13M. As of me writing this article and per the Variety article, Killers of the Flower Moon racked up 23M from international box offices, while Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour only managed to bring in an additional $10.5M. Obviously, this is Eras Tour’s 2nd weekend at the box office and the film has already made over $160M from the box office (which is really impressive), but I just think this stat shows how media and the corporate world (mainly US media and corporate world) has over sold Taylor Swift.
If they can get a guy like me, who has absolutely no love or hate for Taylor Swift and her music (I think she and her music is fine, and I’d be a 50 on a scale of 0-100 on how much I like her), annoyed by how much they’re promoting her, you know you’re screwing up.
Taylor Swift is not the second coming, she isn’t a god amongst mankind, and she isn’t the best thing since sliced bread. She’s a brilliant, talented singer, promoter, and performer…who is being hyped beyond belief to interlock segments of entertainment, music, and sports that just don’t need to be connected.
