Unity Has DITCHED The BIGGEST CANCER IN GAMING!

Unity Have DITCHED The BIGGEST CANCER IN GAMING! (Team Cherry-Hollow Knight: Silksong-Reveal Trailer)

At long last this malignant tumor has been removed from the world of gaming. Unity has finally ridden themselves of one of the most cancerous, corrosive, and corrupt forces in gaming today as their CEO John Riccitiello has “retired” effectively immediately from the company.

Well, even though Unity has probably screwed themselves for the rest of time, at least they did the right thing in the end.

After one of the most disastrous, reputation-destroying business decisions of all-time, Unity has come back to reality and realized that their CEO John Riccitiello is one of the worst people in gaming, and has allowed him to “resign” effectively immediately. And, to be honest, I’m just glad this guy is out of gaming for good.

If you’ve read any of my articles over the last year, I hope you’ve seen that I really don’t like to brutally, callously, and flippantly call out people with really damaging reputational adjectives like “biggest cancer”, “cancerous”, “malignant tumor”, “corrosive”, or “corrupt force” when criticizing someone.

I just feel that it’s mostly unnecessary in the vast majority of cases to completely disregard what someone says or does with these types of insults…but this is one of those special case where I HAVE TO say how awful this person really is.

Now, for those of you who don’t know who John Riccitiello is, let me just say that he not only was the CEO of EA from 2007-2013, which is the time period a lot of people attribute to EA become the greedy, vile gaming monster we all know and despise today, but he also was so greedy, money-hungry, and incompetent himself that he was allowed to “resign” (aka: he was politely kicked out) from EA.

Yes, you read that right, Riccitiello was too greedy and stupid for even EA to hold onto.

That’s SHOCKING in its own right, but it’s most definitely not the worst thing he’s done for the gaming world. He not only was the CEO that saw EA begin implementing predatory microtransactions and loot boxes into their games (FIFA 09 was the first EA title to have them), but he also was on tape saying that he wanted to implement $1+ microtransactions for every time users want to reload a magazine for a gun in Battlefield while they’re in the middle of playing the game.

And, if that doesn’t seem too bad in of itself, then perhaps his logic of people “not really being price-sensitive at that point in time” and “the reason a play-first-pay-later model works so nicely, is a consumer gets engaged in a property, they might spend 10, 20, 30, 5o hours in the game.

And when they’re deep into the game, they’re well invested in it,” for charging people microtransactions on such integral parts (like reloading a gun in a war game) of a game will change your mind.

This is the definition of predatory business practices, and Riccitiello is a GAMING PREDATOR!

I mean, at least I think that way, and I’m sure a bunch of you guys agree as he’s now out as the Unity CEO after implement pretty much the same exact predatory microtransactions practices at Unity.

If you don’t know what those practices were, he actually released an entire installation fee for EVERY SINGLE TIME a gaming developer who uses Unity has one of their games purchased. Oh, and that’s on top of the fees and software subscriptions a developer would already have to pay for the company to use their game engines.

But, back to the installation point, to make this a little more tangible to understand, if Rockstar had used the Unity engine to make GTA V and the game has currently sold 185M copies, Unity would charge Rockstar anywhere from 1¢-20¢ PER INSTALL on top of the monthly fees and software subscriptions.

So, in this case, if Rockstar used the base install subscription plan of 20¢/install, they would have to pay Unity $37M of their own profits plus their monthly engine and software subscription fee!

Now, that may not be a lot to pay for a company the size of Rockstar, but that’s a massive fee to take out of a smaller developer that sees one of their games explode in popularity. And that’s why the gaming world rightfully stood up against this crony corporate greed of the highest order and pretty much bitched Unity into reversing all of these policies, begging for developers to stay with the engine (which I don’t think is going to happen), and now “allowing” John Riccitiello to “retire” (aka: they fired his ass).

The damage to Unity’s reputation is probably beyond repair at this point, but at least they did the right thing in the end and reversed these forsaken policies. Even if it was through public and developer pressure.
