There’s no way the Cowboys are going to win the Super Bowl…right? The Dallas Cowboys really look like the team to beat in the NFC after they completely DESTROYED the Commanders on Thanksgiving Day, but are they actually Super Bowl contenders?
Will this finally be the year the curse is broken?
Despite literally being cursed for nearly 30 years with a lack of playoff success and constant playoff collapses, the Dallas Cowboys finally look like they will be able to leap over the final hurtle and win the franchise’s 6th and record-tying Super Bowl. And, even though Cowboys fans are going to be jumping for joy all the way until the playoffs, I think this is just a false hope.
I know I sound like a massive Debby Downer and Cowboys fans really don’t want to hear anyone say their team is going to come up short….AGAIN…in the biggest moments in the playoffs, but I just don’t see how the Cowboys are going to win the Super Bowl this season. Even after that incredible 45-10 victory over the Washington Commanders this past Thanksgiving.
I’m not sure how many of you guys watched the game yesterday, but the Dallas Cowboys looked like the second coming of the 80’s San Francisco 49ers against that depleted and just downright pathetic Commanders defense. Not only did the entire offense go off for 331 total passing yards, 100 total rushing yards, 431 total scrimmage yards, 5 touchdowns, 45 points put up on the board, and averaging nearly 9 yards/play, but they also did so with just 23:06 of possession and a full 25 plays LESS than the Commanders had.
Yes, the Cowboys acted more like outlaws against the Commanders and robbed Washington blind of any dignity left in that sorry state of a team. It was a massacre that saw Dak Prescott continue looking like a legit MVP candidate with 22/32 completions, 331 yards, 4 TDs, and a no turnover stat line as he managed to get 7 RECIEVERS over the 20-yard mark.
Sure, he was coming up against a defense that currently ranks in the Bottom-3 of the league in passing yards against/game (3rd worst), total yards against/game (3rd worst), and points allowed/game (the worst) (though, they have played a game more than most teams, so these stats could look a little better by the end of the week), while the defense itself has already lost Chase Young & Montaz Sweat to trades and 10 players to injury and trades.
But these are still impressive stats…and even more so on the defensive side of the ball.
Micah Parsons (3 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 1 TFL, 1 PD, 3 QB hits), Jonhathan Hankins (4 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 TFL, 2 QB hits), Damone Clark (9 tackles, 1 PD), Jourdan Lewis (6 tackles), and the history-maker himself DaRon Bland (10 tackles, 1 PD, 1 INT, 1 Pick Six) all looked sensational against the Commanders offense and the current NFL passing leader in Sam Howell as they racked up 81 tackles, 4 sacks, 5 TFL, 5 PD, 8 QB hits, 1 INT, and 1 DEF TD, and they only held Washington to 10 points despite the Commanders nearly having the ball for 40 minutes.
Great performance, right? I mean, the only thing bad about the Cowboys’ day yesterday was Dak Prescott and DaRon Bland having to eat that putrefied turkey CBS gave them.
Well, no, that’s not the only bad thing about yesterday as that hammering win just kind of reinforced what I believe about this team: the Cowboys can’t win against great teams.
Now, I’ve seen a lot of people in the sports media saying that the Cowboys are phonies because they haven’t won against a team with a winning record this season, and I get the criticism. It’s true that they have not won against a team with a .500+ record yet.
But does anyone think this team is REALLY going to lose to the likes of New Orleans, Tampa Bay, or whatever forsaken team comes out of the NFC South as the division winner in the Wild Card round (if Dallas does end up as the 5th seed)? Obviously, they will.
But Dallas going up against the likes of Philly, San Francisco, and Detroit has disaster written all over it, and I’m not sure how they would do against Seattle or even Minnesota. The Cowboys have already been blown to bits by the 49ers and they lost a close game to the Eagles. And those are the types of teams in the types of games that will determine if the Cowboys can even reach the NFC championship game, let alone the Super Bowl, this season.
And, judging by history, I doubt they will step up to the challenge.
