The Fallout Series Might Actually Be…Pretty Good

The Fallout Series Might Actually Be...Pretty Good (Amazon-Fallout-Official Teaser Trailer)

I’m not getting my hopes up just yet…but I’m also not discarding it either. Amazon released the first trailer for their new Fallout series, and what was shown off actually looks like it could be a decent show.

So, this was a very pleasant surprise.

Despite being the very first Bethesda game to be adapted and Amazon’s rather shaky T.V. adaptation track record, the new Fallout series might actually be a very good show if the rest of the series is as promising and compelling as the new trailer Amazon released. And, to be honest, I’m actually very hopeful now for this show.

So, to be honest, I was really expecting this show to be a complete trainwreck. Not only was this going to be the first Bethesda-game adaptation with very minimal investment/oversight from Bethesda themselves (aside from Todd Howard being credited as an executive producer), but the fact that it was Amazon that was producing this series was also a major turnoff for me.

I mean, putting aside the tremendous success of The Boys (although, I think Amazon is getting ahead of themselves now with these The Boys spinoffs before the main series has even had 4 seasons of television!), what major television success has Amazon had? Invincible is a great show, Fleabag won a good number of awards back in its day (though it does star Phoebe Waller-Bridge, so there’s that drawback), The Expanse has been on for a long time, and Jack Ryan is a very good series.

I’m sorry, but most of Amazon’s large projects, like The Peripheral, Rings of Power, Citadel, Crisis In Six Scenes, etc., have been pretty massive flops. And I really thought that was going to be the case for this Fallout series for the reasons I just mentioned.

But then the first trailer for the show released…and, I think I’m actually a little excited for this show now.

Obviously, you can’t judge the whole show based on the brief 2 minutes of edited, compiled footage we saw in the trailer, but there was a lot of good things to like about how this adaption of Fallout is going to go. First off, it seems like Amazon is actually sticking to the rather sillier, “not taking itself so serious”, adventure tone of the Fallout franchise with the trailer by the rather odd and goofy looking things I saw in the trailer. And I’m all for that.

I don’t want this series to make a complete joke of the Fallout lore, world, and game franchise, but not pulling a Halo and making this series into something so dramatically different than what the games where to the point it can no longer even be called an “inspiration” (more like a Buffalo Bill adaptation) is a great start.

Fallout is the far more jovial (even though it is set in during a nuclear fallout), unserious of Bethesda’s two great gaming IPs (the other obviously being The Elder Scrolls), and it would have felt weird if Amazon made this a super dark, intimidating, menacing trailer.

Plus, I also really liked the casting choices so far…even though I’ve only seen two minutes of edited footage.

I really don’t know who most of these people (aside from Walton Goggins…who is a great actor) are or what their characters are going to be, but I really liked the main vault girl, who I believe is Ella Purnell, as she seemed really expressive and very fitting in the Fallout world.

Oh, and I’m also super happy that the showrunners decided to set this adaptation in the Boneyard…which was featured in the first Fallout game as that connects the beginning of this series to the start of the Fallout video games.

Obviously, I’ve got no idea what the plot will be, who the main characters are, what will their characters arcs be like, how the CGI and VFXs will hold up, and if the writing will be more on par with The Boys-level of good or Rings of Power-level of downright shocking, but I’m actually now a little excited to find out.
