Why is this film getting ANOTHER SEQUEL?!?! Top Gun is quickly becoming a full-fledge film franchise as rumors have swirled out of Paramount that they are in the works of making yet ANOTHER Top Gun movie!
This just makes no sense.
Despite really not needing Top Gun: Maverick as a sequel, the Top Gun franchise is for reasons that can only be narrowed down to pure greed being made into a full-on film franchise as there have been rumors floating that Paramount wishes to make yet another sequel. And, if you couldn’t tell, I think this news is the embodiment as to what is wrong with Hollywood.
If you want a classic case of why Hollywood is in its worst iteration since its inception, this is the reason why.
I’m sorry, but why does Top Gun need another sequel? I’ll be the first one to tell you that Top Gun: Maverick is a fantastic movie and easily should have been the winner of all the major movie categories as it was one of the greatest sequels in cinema history, but even that movie really didn’t need to exist. Again, it’s a fantastic tale to an underrated classic from a bygone age of filmmaking, but it didn’t really need to be made aside from paying tribute to the first film and Tom Cruise.
And, seeing as how Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick had straight-forward endings, it begs the question as to why a third film is being made, right? Oh, I know why. It’s because of the only thing that fuels filmmaking these days…and that’s MONEY!
I’m not going to pretend that making money and accumulating fame/praise for one’s work wasn’t a big motivator in the past for filmmakers, actors, directors, producers, and studios, etc. as that would be a flat out lie. The magnificent perks of earning millions (if not billions) of dollars, world-wide praise, and fame for one’s art has always been near the forefront of a filmmaker’s mind, yet it is now the ONLY THING that drives these people and corporations today.
Aside from a very select few filmmakers and movie studios, the vast majority of Hollywood only cares for their bottom dollar and how much money they can squeeze out of us consumers. Now, they usually like doing this while also promoting what they think makes them sound cultured and sophisticated, but they really just care for maximizing as much money from their IPs and blocker buster franchises as possible to the detriment of creativity and ingenuity.
And that’s why Top Gun 3 is supposedly in the works over at Paramount as Top Gun: Maverick, despite wrapping up its story perfectly and being one of the best sequels ever, made a monstrous $1.5B from the box office. You want Paramount to make a brand-new story that has no prior status in Hollywood? Too bad as that’s “too risky” and not worth investing the insane hundreds of millions these studios shove down the throats of filmmakers.
We’ll have to wait and see if this film even transpires; but if it does, I have very little hope for it.
