Why does anyone even watch the crap they put out? Netflix is just really the world’s worst adapters of anything historical or fictional related, and you should stay away from them like the plague in my opinion.
Netflix sucks. There’s no two ways about it.
Despite being the very first streaming service and having fantastic shows and films like Stranger Things, The Crown, The Irishman, BoJack Horseman, Daredevil, Narcos, The Ballard of Buster Scruggs, etc., Netflix is nothing more than a crapshoot factory in my opinion as they haven’t produced a good enough catalog to warrant all of their hype. And, to be honest, they might be the world’s worst adapters of fiction and history.
Okay, I know this sounds like a hate-fueled rant against Netflix…and it kind of is.
Netflix has always seen as one of the biggest and most profitable film and television studios and distributors in the world and it most certainly is due to the nuance of its early existence. But the last few years of utter junk that has come out of that crapshoot has completely turned me away from watching anything new it produces. And it’s really all due to how AWFUL Netflix is at producing adaptation…such as the newest Last Airbender series and Alexander The Great miniseries.
Now, not to sound like a complete buffoon here, but I am not a fan of The Last Airbender. Obviously, I know the original animated show was a massive success and hit amongst a lot of people, but I just never really found it all that interesting. That’s just how my entertainment tastebuds work, I guess. Anyway, that’s not the point of this article.
The point of this article is how NETLFIX IS TEARING OUT THE HEART OF THE LAST AIRBENDER ANIMATED SHOW! If you want a great breakdown of the difference and changes, I suggest you read this “Netflix’s ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Keeps Throwing Up Endless Red Flags (forbes.com)” by Forbes’ Paul Tassi. He seems to be really invested and a fan of the original show and worth listening too.
Regardless, it’s still shocking to me how the Netflix writers are once again changing everything and anything about the original characters, remaking the characters’ likes and interests to fit their own agendas and narratives, and then repacking it as “a remake” or a “remix” of the original source. Just like how they butchered The Witcher, which is a franchise I am very much invested in and appreciate.
In the Witcher, they changed pretty much every core aspect of Ciri, Yennefer, Triss, Vesemir, Dandellion, the Northern Sorceresses, the Scoia’tael and Francesca Findabair, Emperor Emhyr and Nilfgaard, and even Geralt himself, twisted their goals and characterization to fit their own stupid agendas, and then packaged it as if it was an adaptation of the books. No, that’s what you call a butchery.
And the exact same thing is happening to The Last Airbender, and it already happened to Alexander the Great.
Netflix must have some sort of fetish for bringing in activist “historians” (more like propagandists) and allowing them to make miniseries about historical characters as this is the fourth or fifth legend they have butchered. There was that horrid series about the Roman Empire, that dreadful series about the main antagonists of Rome, the Cleopatra farce, the Vikings series, and the one about the Samari.
They’re just really, really bad at making serious, historical, and accurate depictions.
And this one about Alexander the Great was no different.
From the poor and inaccurate casting of Alexander (what else is new) to the horrific recreations to the downright atrocious mischaracterizations of the goals and ambitions of Alexander and the key figures to his life, there is just very little positive I can say about this telling of Alexander’s tale. But, that nothing new for Netflix.
The only thing Netflix can do well is market and make crap because they shouldn’t have 1/10th of the subscriber base they boast of with the quality of their content.
