The dynasty is complete. The Kansas City Chiefs have beaten the San Francisco 49ers once again in the Super Bowl as they won in the last second of overtime 25-22 to complete their dynasty!
This is and will be the best team of the decade!
Despite being underdogs in nearly all of their games, the Kansas City Chiefs have once again proven the outside world wrong as they beat the 49ers 25-22 in an epic Super Bowl to complete their dynasty. And, like I said, this is going to be the best team of the 2020’s…and the decade’s only four years old!
Never EVER bet against this Chiefs dynasty.
Now, I’m not going to go into the nitty-gritty of the game as there’s a million other reviews of that epic showdown, so I’m actually just going to praise the Chiefs for doing what I (and MANY OTHERS) thought impossible: they won the Super Bowl in the face of OVERWHELMING odds.
Seriously, everything the Chiefs faced this season should have capsized their dynasty hopes. Not only did they have the pressure of being the reigning Super Bowl champion, winning 7-straight (which turned into 8) division titles, and reaching the AFC Conference title game in 5 (which turned into 6) seasons, but they also had the pressures of the outside world inserting itself into their season.
From the endless Mahomes vs. Brady G.O.A.T debates, the numerous primetime matchups against the best of the best in the NFL, endless commercial, brand, sponsorship, and television opportunities, to having an entire season of Taylor Swift and her endless list of A-list celebrity friends attending nearly every game, the Chiefs were turned into rockstars and movie stars before our very eyes.
And, that kind of stuff KILLS teams who don’t have the focus and drive of true champions.
I mean, you don’t really have to look any further than the last few years worth of champions and contenders. The 2015 Panthers with MVP Cam Newton, the Legion of Boom Seahawks, the 90’s Packers, the many Cowboys teams of the last two decades, the 90’s Falcons, etc.
All of these contenders and champions achieved relevant pop culture attention and massive sports media attention during their heyday, yet were unable to block out the noise, praise, honors, rewards, etc. to become true dynasties (or even champions in the case of the 2000’s & 2010’s Cowboys teams, 2015 Panthers, and the 90’s Falcons). And their attention wasn’t even in the same stratosphere as this current Chiefs roster has dealt with.
I can’t tell you how insane it is that this Chiefs team, which was plagued with poor receiver play, inexperienced starters, new coordinators and coaches, and injured superstars during the season, was able to block out all the noise and not only defeat the 49ers for a second straight time in the Super Bowl, but also be the first team since the 2003-04 Patriots to repeat as Super Bowl champions.
This shouldn’t have happened…which is the true sign that this Chiefs team is an all-time great roster.
I’m really shocked that the end of the Patriots dynasty gave rise to a Chiefs dynasty INSTANTLY, but that’s just what has happened. And, to be honest, I think this Chiefs team can actually SUPPLANT the Patriots dynasty (it pains me to say it, but it’s true) on the all-time rankings list if they’re able to three-peat as Super Bowl champions again next season.
Now, I know Super Bowl 59 is a LONG WAYS AWAY and the Chiefs are less than a day removed from their triumph last night, but they don’t have TOO MANY starting free agents hitting the market. Resigning L’Jarius Sneed and Chris Jones is an absolute must, but most of these guys can be chopped and changed around.
Plus, they have over $24M in cap space BEFORE I’m assuming they’re able to free up another $10-$20M through contract restructures to ensure at least 5 of their 8 starting free agents come back for another season. And, even better, the vast majority of their starters are all under the age of 30 and now have the experience of winning a Super Bowl under their belts!
Oh, and the three-headed offensive powerhouse of Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Andy Reid will all be back next season too. This is such an incredibly rare opportunity for the Chiefs to actually three-peat, and I really think they may be one of the few teams in NFL history who can pull it off!
In the entire history of the NFL, there has only ever been two teams who have three-peated as champions: the 1965-67 Green Bay Packers and the 1929-31 Green Bay Packers.
In what will become the one of the few dynasties (the 70’s Steelers are the other one with 4 Super Bowls) to actually challenge the Chiefs greatness if they DO three-peat, the 1965-67 Packers, led by Bart Starr, Paul Hornung, and the legendary Vince Lombardi, won the NFL championship in 1965 (the last year prior to the advent of the Super Bowl) and then destroyed the AFL in the first two Super Bowls to win titles (3 NFL championships, 2 Super Bowls) in three straight seasons.
And the mythical 1929-31 Packers, led by Artie Herber, Mike Michalske, and the immortal Curly Lambeau (yes, the guy the Packers field is named after), won three straight during these formative years of the NFL to lay the groundworks for the league’s metamorphosis into the powerhouse that it is today.
That’s the level of greatness we’re talking about here for the Chiefs, and they more than deserve it.
So, congratulations, Kansas City, on another successful season for you guys are most definitely the deserved champions of the NFL!
