Do The Glazers and their cronies truly have no shame? Man United have wisely let David De Gea move on from the club after 12 tremendous years of service, but the way he was treated while leaving was nothing short of appalling.
Kicking club legends out the back door after luring them to it with a treat is what small, unprofessional clubs due to unruly players, not a club the size of Man United.
Despite being one of the greatest goalkeepers the club has ever seen in between the sticks, Manchester United have swatted David De Gea out the backdoor with no fanfare or even a touching tribute as the club retracted his contract offer at the last minute to see him leave on a free. And, even though I agree with letting him go, the way it’s been handled has been nothing short of appalling.
Now, it’s no surprise that something involving The Glazers has ended up in a catastrophic, disorganized mess of a situation as those buffoons might be the dumbest owners in all of sports and are the reasons why Man United has turned into a laughingstock, but this is a new low for them.
David De Gea, a goalkeeper who won the Golden Glove last season with a Premier League-high 18 clean sheets, has a Man United record of 183, has the 4th most Premier League clean sheets with 147, has the 7th most appearances for the club at 545, has won the FA Cup, 2 Carabao Cups, 3 FA Community Shields, 1 Europa League, and was the last player on Man United to have won a Premier League (2013) for the club, was kicked out of the club like some mangy pup.
Not only did he not get an emotional send off in front of the Old Trafford crowd on the final Premier League game of the season (when his future was very much in doubt), but The Glazers and all of their cronies actually gave him a contract extension to only rip it up in his face a few days before his old deal officially expired. Oh, and David De Gea even agreed to take less on his now-defunct contract extension out of a profound respect and loyalty for the club.
Aside from one moment where he was on the verge of joining Real Madrid back in 2014 (which happens to all players when Real comes knocking at your door), David De Gea has been the epitome of loyal to Manchester United and everything the club stands for.
He stayed during the darkest moment in Man United’s recent history (2014-2022) and bailed Man United out of some many games with his otherworldly reflects and shot stopping capabilities as he went on to be Man United’s Player of the Year 4 times during those horrendous years (excluding Mourinho’s 2016 season which saw United win three trophies).
Yet, instead of giving De Gea an honorable exit from the club as Erik Ten Hag’s desire for a new goalkeeper was clear the entire season, The Glazers and their cronies left him hanging by ripping up his already agreed upon deal (if De Gea’s side is to be believed) days before his old deal expired.
Who does that?
Still, as I said, I’m not angry that he’s leaving as his style of goalkeeping just doesn’t translate well into the system Erik Ten Hag has in mind for his teams, while errors and mental lapses have become far too frequent in De Gea’s game these last four years to justify an unchallenged (which a goalie of his talent, capabilities, and legacy deserves and expects) place as United’s #1.
It’s just super unprofessional to let a club legend leave like some back alley homeless guy you just pretended to give shelter but only to say “sike” and slam the door in his face.
