Thor 5 Sounds Like An UTTER DISASTER Waiting To Happen

Thor 5 Sounds Like An UTTER DISASTER Waiting To Happen (Disney/Marvel-Thor: Love And Thunder-Official Trailer)

I don’t think I’ve ever been this worried about a Marvel movie before. Taika Waititi, the presumptive director for Thor 5, has made some recent comments about the “fun”, “colorful”, and “casualness” of the God of Thunder for Thor 5, and I’m now terrified of his vision for the film.

This is going to be the death of Thor, right?

With Thor 5 being in production and Taika Waititi set to return as the director for his third film in the franchise, his comments about Thor’s “fun”, “colorful”, and “casualness” character elements have me EXTREMELY scared about how badly Thor’s ACTUAL character is going to be butchered. And, to be honest, I really think another bad and goofy Thor movie will kill the character.

So, for those who don’t know about the article I’m referring to, Taika Waititi recently sat down for an interview with ScreenRant via the Thor: Love And Thunder The Official Movie Special in which he said about Thor, “It’s got to be something that feels like it’s carrying on with the evolution of the character, but still in a very fun way and still giving him things to come up against that feel like they’re building on the obstacles that he has to overcome…There’s a fun element to him and he has a casualness and a sort of swagger about him.”

And as for the franchise as a whole, he said,” lends itself towards big, inventive, colorful creatures and aliens and things from different worlds.” This whole thinking is the very problem with Waititi’s direction and the recent Thor (and Marvel as a whole) films.

Now, I know a lot of people have been talking about how Waititi said the new Thor villain can’t have “a villain that’s weaker than Hela” as their main takeaway from the article, but I really couldn’t care less about who the next villain in Thor 5 is. It could be Doctor Bong for all I care (see if you can even find that character in Marvel comics these days) as the villain being uber powerful and possessing scary magical abilities really shouldn’t be at the top of the list of things to include in a Thor film (or any film for that matter).

The film should be discovering and providing growth to the central characters (aka: Thor), and seeing them become more nuanced, mature, and perhaps heroic character.

Yet, even though Waititi said something like this in the interview, his whole way of achieving that is completely backwards to the essence of Thor.

The God of Thunder is supposed to be the pride of Asgard and one of the most heroic, selfless, honorable, and courageous heroes out of all the Avengers, yet the last two movies (Thor: Ragnarök and Thor: Love And Thunder) have just been about making Thor the biggest buffoon this side of the Milkey Way galaxy.

Whether it’s Hela, Valkyrie, The Grandmaster, Gorr the Godkiller, or Jane Foster (post the original two Thor movies), Thor is always getting upstaged and outsmarted by his allies and enemies. CONSTANTLY.

And it’s all in the name of “comedy”.

I mean, I don’t even have to talk about the movies and their utter reliance on slapstick, Three Stooges-level of comedy to tell you how ridiculous Waititi has made the Thor franchise as his own words best describe it.

Saying that Thor must be developed in a “very fun way” and that the franchise as a whole “lends itself towards big, inventive, colorful creatures” takes away from any serious storytelling beats you NEED from a dramatic, cohesive, and serious story and characters such as Marvel and Thor.

I’m not saying that Thor must be as serious as the first two films (though, those two are still the best in the series in my opinion), but they can’t be as painfully dumb and parodizing as Thor: Love And Thunder was.

Seriously, Jane Foster literally was suffering from Stage 4 cancer, looked as ragged, weak, and grey as one does from that horrid disease, and ended up dying from it in the end, yet the whole movie spends it’s time making fun of Thor, the Greek Gods, the remnants of the Asgardian culture, and Gorr the Godkiller. You’d honestly be forgiven for forgetting that Jane even had one of the most horrific illnesses known to mankind for the entirety of the film.

Though, just to wrap things up, the worst part of the entire interview is this, “You know, I got sick of the character (Thor) pretty quick every couple of years.”

I’m sorry, but why the HELL ARE YOU STILL MAKING THOR MOVIES IF YOU GET SICK OF THE CHARACTER EVERY COUPLE OF YEARS, TAIKA?!?! I’m not saying you need to love Thor every waking minute of your life, but at least give the character the respect he deserves and not basterdize his character arc just because you’re getting bored of him.

We’ll have to see how Thor 5 goes down and if it even happens with Waititi at the helm (he’s not been officially named as director just yet), but I really don’t have high hopes for it now. Marvel and Disney just can’t get out of their own way.
