Well, I guess the Jets are now officially the Offseason Champions. Sean Payton and the Denver Broncos have once again made utter fools of themselves as they got badly beaten by the New York Jets…which is the very same team Payton was lambasting in the offseason.
Nathaniel Hackett must feel pretty good today.
Despite talking so much trash in the offseason about the Jets and Nathaniel Hacket, Sean Payton and his Denver Broncos have been humiliated once again as they got soundly defeated 31-21 by the New York Jets, the new and firstly crowed “Offseason Champions”. And, to be honest, this is exactly what Payton and the Broncos deserved.
Now, I’m not going to be a hypocritical and say that I was always against Payton in the beginning as that would be a lie. I actually still think Payton is a great head coach and one of the most brilliant offensive minds to have ever coached in the NFL, while I also believe he was completely correct about the 2023 Broncos under Nathaniel Hackett.
I mean, let’s not forget that the Broncos had one of the league’s worst offenses as they ranked dead last in total points scored with 287, they were Bottom-12 in rushing yards/game (113.8 rushing yards/game) and total yards/game (325.1 yards/game), they had the 14th worst passing yards/game offense (211.3 passing yards/game), they went 11 games last season with them scoring UNDER 20 points a game to have a dreadful record of 5-12, he broke Russell Wilson after the Broncos gave up their 1st born baby for him in the offseason, and he was fired after 14 weeks.
Oh, and Nathaniel Hackett is an offensive-minded coach, and was coaching Aaron Rodgers the last couple of seasons prior to joining up with the Broncos.
So, to say that Hackett was a horrible head coach, and his tenure will go down as one of the worst in Broncos history (if not NFL history) is not incorrect to say. But saying that and then going 1-4 with one of the NFL’s most pathetic teams and the league’s worst defense might be an even more egregious sin to coaching.
You would think that the Broncos, who have had a large, green crosshair on them by the Jets ever since their HC went out and obliterated New York and Nathaniel Hackett in the offseason, would have shown up to play and had a little fight in them, right?
That was the biggest game of their season thus far as they not only had a chance to improve to 2-3 and get a little momentum going on the year against a team who shouldn’t be that much better on them on paper, but they also could rewrite some of the narratives on their season with a win.
But what happened? The Broncos got blown out in the 2nd half 23-7 to lose the game 31-21, Russell Wilson couldn’t hold onto the ball and had coughed up a dreadful late scope-and-score fumble that sealed the game, the Broncos receiving core didn’t have a player with more than 50+ receiving yards again, the Broncos defense gave up 30+ points again, and Denver actually made Nathaniel Hackett and Zach Wilson look competent.
And, even worse for the Broncos and Payton, his own team and coaching staff made him look like the biggest fool to have ever stepped onto an NFL sideline.
Sure, Payton has the Broncos offense playing better with only the rushing attack being in the Bottom-14 of the NFL with it averaging 104.2 rushing yards/game, but the Denver defense is SO MUCH WORSE than last season to make any improvement on offense look miniscule.
The Broncos are giving up the most yards against/game of all 32 teams (450.6 yards against/game), the most rushing yards against/game of all 32 teams (187.6 rushing yards against/game), the most points against/game of all 32 teams (32.6 points against/game), the 4th most passing yards against/game (263.0 passing yards against/game), and they were the first unit in nearly 60 years to give up 70 points in a single game.
That’s AWFUL!!!
Defensive coordinator Vance Joesph should have been fired two weeks ago after losing 70-20 against the Miami Dolphins, and Sean Payton has to be on the hotseat as that was HIS GUY to manage the defense.
So, with Payton slowly improving the Denver offense and turning the Broncos defense into the literal worst unit in all of football, there’s a real argument to say Payton’s tenure is EVEN WORSE than Nathaniel Hackett. And that’s an embarrassment for a coach like Sean Payton.
