This will destroy EVERYTHING the MCU has accomplished. Supposedly, Marvel is seriously considering the biggest mistake the studio will make in its near 20-year history with them thinking about bringing back dead MCU characters for a new film.
If this happens, the MCU is forever gone.
In what can only be a last-ditch, Hail Mary attempt to bring back some attention and respect to the MCU, Marvel and Disney are seriously considering resurrecting key MCU characters like Tony Stark and Black Widow from the dead. And, being perfectly honest, that will be my final straw for the MCU and Marvel.
Now, for those who don’t know what I’m talking about, there was a few reports by various major media outlets (though the story started with Variety) that were released a few days ago saying that the Marvel higher ups and Disney executives were seriously considering bringing back Tony Stark, Black Widow, and even Captain America from the dead given how the MCU is in an all-time low lull of popularity and fan interest.
Supposedly in one of the new movies they have lined up, the MCU would resurrect these characters and insert them back into the main narrative like nothing happened…even though their deaths were vital in concluding the epic Infinity Gauntlet saga. Sounds just super “great”, right?
Okay, would I love to see Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, Chris Evans’ Captain America, and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow back in the MCU again for another film? Absolutely. Would I like these characters to be the central, leading protagonist and draw attention away from the utter clowns and useless fools Marvel has promoted in their place? Again, ABSOLUTELY!
The MCU was at its greatest of great arcs and highest of heights when these characters were the ones leading the show and building upon the fantastic character work Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and everyone else at Marvel Comics did in the comic book world back in the 1940s, 50’s, and 60s. But those days have come and gone.
There’s a reason why the central figures of Iron Man, Captain America, and Black Widow have been moved on as the leading heroes of the MCU, and it’s because they successfully completed their character arcs.
They were three of the six main leads that created the MCU back in 2008, they made the film franchise the most popular entertainment universe in cinema history throughout the 2010’s, they capped off an epic duology against one of the greatest villains in cinema history in Thanos in the Infinity War saga, and they ushered in a new age at Marvel with their character conclusions at the end of Endgame.
They don’t have any more story to tell in the MCU…or at least this current version of the MCU.
If Marvel and Disney want to tear up the MCU and start completely over again, then by all means have Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johannson come back and play their legendary parts. Yeah, they’re probably too old to play these roles now, but I have nothing against the current continuity being discarded and a new timeline/saga being introduced for our viewing appetites.
It’s what guys like Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, etc. did in the comics when the stories got stale and oversaturated.
Yet, that’s not what Disney and the Marvel executives want. No, they want to bring back Iron Man, Captain America, and Black Widow IN THE CURRENT VERSION of the MCU…even though they completed their character arcs and are most certainly dead.
And, as I said, the only reason why they want to do that is because they screwed up introducing the new set of heroes in Phases 4 and 5 of the MCU so badly that they not only created horrible, boring, stiff, and stale central protagonists, but they also created a massive rift between the studio and its fans. And what happens when there is a massive rift between the studio and the fans? Oh, that’s right, the studio LOSES A SHIT TON OF MONEY!!!
Marvel is literally just being Hela from Thor: Ragnarök and he army of undead Asgardian warriors.
Just as she resurrected the legendary Asgardian warriors of the past to fight for her side in the current day (well, current day of 2017) against Thor, Loki, Hulk, and the Asgardian kingdom, Marvel is resurrected their legendary money-makers in Tony Stark, Steve Rodgers, and Natasha Romanov to battle against the fan apathy and awful creative decision making that is threating the very existence of their studio. And just like Hela, Marvel is going to get burned if they make this asinine move.
We’ll see if Marvel goes through with this boneheaded decision and brings back the legendary trio, but I can tell you one thing for certain: if they do it, I, along with many of you guys, will be completely done with the MCU.
