How has this team really gotten worse? Bayern Munich are seriously facing the prospects of not winning a single trophy this season as they are one leg away from being knocked out of the Champions League!
This team is a complete disaster.
Despite having all of the history, success, and financial power on their side in Germany, Bayern Munich are seriously looking at the reality of not winning a trophy this season for they are 5 points behind Leverkusen in the Bundesliga and are down 1-0 to Lazio in the Champions League Round of 16. And, to be honest, I think this is the worst Bayern team in the millennium.
How the might have fallen in Germany.
I’m sure everyone has seen the Lazio vs. Bayern Munich match by now to know that the 11X defending German champions are not only facing Champions League elimination next week at the Allianz Areana if they cannot defeat Lazio, but they also are a full 5 points behind Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga title race with only 13 matchdays to go.
Oh, and did I mention that Bayer Leverkusen, the current league leaders in Germany, not only hammered Bayern 3-0 (but it really should have been 4 0r 5-0) five days ago, but also are undefeated in their 31 matches so far this season! This is the mountain Bayern Munich has to climb to just win A SINGLE TROPHY this season.
Yes, we’re really talking about Bayern Munich not winning a trophy this season after their embarrassing losses to RB Leipzig (3-0) and 2nd division-side Saarbrucken (2-1) in the DFL-Supercup Final and DFL Poktal Cup, respectively, early in the season. And Bayern really have no one else to blame other than themselves for the failures of the last two seasons.
Sure, Bayern “won” (more like were handed the trophy by Dortmund) the Bundesliga last season due to Dortmund being complete clowns on the final matchday, but that disaster of a season really should have been the warning signs for the Bayern management that this squad needed to be rebuilt.
The Bundesliga and the Supercup (5-3 win over Leipzig at the very start of the season…and under a different manager) were the only trophies Bayern won last season, while Bayern were knocked out the Champions League in the quarterfinals, the DFL Poktal in the quarterfinals, and earned just 71 points in the Bundesliga. That was their lowest tally of points since the 2010-11 season’s 65-point haul…which saw them finish 3rd!
And do you know what their projected points tally is for this campaign? 78-82 points.
“Hey, that’s not so bad,” you may be saying to yourself right now. And it really isn’t…if you didn’t know that points tally wouldn’t even crack their Top-5 highest points tally since they’ve gone on this 11-year title winning streak. Plus, if they did hit 82 points, it would be a four-year high in points totals going all the way back to when they won the treble under Hanzi Flick in 2019/20.
In other words, this team is regressing and can only barely match a standard that’s now four years old.
It’s becoming clearly that allowing the previous regime of Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidžić to sell Robert Lewandoski, messing up that situation with Hansi Flick (who was the manager during the treble season), prematurely firing Julian Nagelsmann, hiring Thomas Tuchel, and then not replacing the aging, declining core elements of this team at any stage of their tenure was a huge mistake.
I’m sorry, but there’s no reason why Manuel Neuer (37), Thomas Muller (34), Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (34), Dayot Upamecano (25…but crap), Eric Dier (30), and Raphael Guerreiro (30) should be near the starting 11 of this current Bayern squad, let alone all take key roles in Bayern’s disastrous losses to Lazio and Leverkusen. And that’s really the fault of the old regime of Bayern being stuck in their ways and refusing to update the squad with fresher, not in-house groomed talents.
Yes, there are some promising young stars coming up, such as Jamal Musiala and Mathys Tel, but this squad needed heavy outside invigoration to succeed in the future. And it wasn’t given that…to the detriment of Bayern Munich’s title and CL prospects this season.
