Capcom Showcase Could Have Been So Much More

The 2022 Capcom (mini E3, essentially) showcase has come and gone, though it probably could have never come, and we would never have known the difference. I’m not saying that the showcase was bad, as it was very nicely presented. With each game that was featured, its respective director/content head/lead designer prerecorded a video message that played alongside the games’ trailers.

The real issue was that there was nothing overtly new showcased. And that we were trolled. I’ll get to that towards the end.

We all new already that a Resident Evil 4 remaster/remake was coming out and was going to be showcased. And with the success of Resident Evil Village, it was almost a guarantee that some sort of DLC content was going to be showcased today as well. And it was.

The Shadows of Rose was announced, along with a third person mode for Resident Evil Village, the Resident Evil multiplayer tagalong game to Resident Evil Village, and the Mercenaries Mode that allows us to play as Lady Dimitrescu, Karl Heisenburg, and Chris Redfield. The Shadows of Rose looked to be the most promising and exciting, exploring a whole new reality-warping dimension as Rose should be fun. Finally, playing as Lady Dimitrescu should also be great too. Though all of this was to be expected, more or less.

Street Fighter 6 looked to have some interesting new features, but it seemed to be aways away from release. Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbrake was unveiled as an expansion to Monster Hunter Rise and looked pretty good. Though, by the look of the trailer, it could be shrouded in loot boxes or however Capcom disguises them in the game. I really hope that is not the case.

Also, the one new game shown was called Exoprimal, which is co-op dinosaurs shooter game, which some overlord robot named Levithan pairs up the players in 6-person teams in order to follow his objects and kill the dinosaurs. Apparently, by completing enough objects, we will unveil our overlord robot’s true intentions and destroy him. Or something like that. The game looked decent, though I’m not sure how its execution will play out. It could get very repetitive just killing dinosaurs over and over and over again, even with overlord Levithan giving us variated mission.

And for the 10th year anniversary of Dragon’s Dogma, we were trolled by the developers. Yes, Capcom set up a whole showcase block for the Dragon’s Dogma developers to unveil…a new announcement for June 16th. Which they didn’t even say was about. Now, could it be a sequel? Maybe. Was it kind of silly to have an unveiling an announcement that is set to take place two days after the showcase? Yes, very. If the announcement is going to be a sequel to Dragon Dogma, then it really should have been announced at the showcase. It would have sent the show up from a B- to an A- for me.

All in all, it was not a bad show. It was not a great show. It was just the showcase most people expected. That is to say, kind of bland. If there was another new IP announced at the showcase, and Dragon’s Dogma sequel was unveiled the show could have ranked as high as Microsoft’s. But it was not to be.

Here’s hoping the games, updates, and DLCs to be released are good.
