The Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Commanders have been punished for violating the NFL’s non-contact policy in OTA sessions, with Dallas coach Mike McCarthy and Commanders coach Ron Rivera each getting fined $100,000 by the league. So, in other words, America’s Team and the NFL’s Pariah have been caught doing something they shouldn’t.
A Mike McCarthy-led team clumsily violating the rules by getting caught doing the same exact thing they did last year? Yeah, no real shocker here.
Ever since Mike McCarthy was hired as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys back in 2020, this team has gone through constant controversies and missteps for just plain dumb things. (Anyone remember McCarthy saying he studied film the entire time he was unemployed to get Cowboys job, only to later reveal in a different press conference that he lied about the whole thing? Or what about when his buddy Mike Nolan whipped tabasco sauce in his eye during a press conference?)
This is now two years in a row that Mike McCarthy has been fined and punished for violating the NFL’s OTA non-contact rule. He really is doing his best to annoy not only fans, but also Jerry Jones and the rest of the Cowboys front office. With all of the Sean Payton and Dan Quinn replacement talk, it is really making wonder if McCarthy is trying to get himself fired with his constant blunders.
Now, as for Ron Riveria, I am really starting to pity the task ahead of him. Not only has he already been dealt with a poor roster to start with and having to deal with cancer, but he also has Dan Synder as an owner. I can’t think of a worse situation for a coach to be in.
Synder, the NFL’s pariah, has been involved in so many controversies it is getting hard to count them all. From selling US themed hat for $25 after the 9/11 tragedy, to signing Albert Haynesworth to a 7-year, $100 million contract, doubling down on Washington’s old name (until forced to change it), countless harassment against women lawsuits and scandals, the Jon Gruden emails, and now being investigated by the US Government of defrauding the NFL and consumers, he really has shown himself to be a repugnant stain on Washington and all of the NFL’s reputation.
Is this newest OTA controversies Dan Synder’s fault? No, it is probably all on Ron Rivera’s shoulders. Still, it must be impossible to create a winning, honorable team with a man like Dan Synder as your owner.
Anyway, these OTA controversies really won’t matter when the season starts this August. The Commanders will still be bad, while the Cowboys will get bounced in the playoffs before the NFC Championship game once again.
