We all knew this was coming after Robert Salah’s press conference. Zach Wilson has been officially benched by Jets HC Robert Salah in light of his immaturity and lack of responsibly for the Jets abysmal offense that cost them the game against the Patriots.
How much stupider can you get? After throwing for just 77 yards and completing barley 40% of his passes in a game where the Jets lost 10-3 because the offense couldn’t score, Zach Wilson had the nerve to go before the media and say that he didn’t feel like he let down the Jets defense.
You know, the very same Jets defense that not only held the Patriots to just 3 points for the entirety of the game, but also kept them to under 300 total yards of offense in Foxborough.
It was the special teams unit that gave up the winning touchdown, not the defense. And Zach Wilson is out here saying that he bears no responsibility for losing that game.
I’m kind of shocked that the Jets locker room didn’t force him to hitch-hike back to New York as his comments were not only extraordinarily dumb, but also shows how immature the young QB still is. Even if Wilson went 45/50 for 575 yards and 5 touchdowns but still lost the game, the ownness on him to apologize for the loss would remain as it does for every quarterback who loses. And especially those in New York.
Whether Wilson likes it or not, the quarterback position comes with the most responsibility and accountability as it serves as the focal point of every single NFL team. It is the pinnacle of the NFL leadership tree. The sooner he comes to understand that the franchises he plays for, and particular ones with such massive media presences as the Jets have, need to have leadership coming from the top of ‘the tree’ the better.
And that leadership comes with taking accountability for every single loss his teams suffer for the rest of his career, regardless of if it is down to his own play or not.
So, with the Jets playing the tanking Chicago Bears this weekend, I suspect Wilson will have to sit on the bench for a while as his backup, Mike White, should have a field day against that Bears defense. But that’s a good thing for Wilson.
He needs some time to reflect and grow from this experience if he ever hopes to develop into the franchise QB the Jets saw him to be.
