What a terrible offseason this has been for LA. The Los Angeles Dodgers are having one of the worst offseason of all time as they have shedded extremely important players left and right to free agency.
There’s no other way to put it than to just say that this has been an offseason from hell for the Dodgers. How else would you describe the offseason the Dodgers are having?
Not only have they lost out on signing some of the biggest names of this stacked free agent class, but they have also lost a lot of key players from their league best 111-win season that saw them reach the NL Divisional Series. Aside from resigning Clayton Kershaw (which was important), the Dodgers have lost practically everyone else who hit the market.
Trea Turner? Gone to the Phillies for 11-years, $300M. Tyler Anderson? Gone to cross-city rivals LA Angels for 3 years, $39M. Andrew Heaney? Gone to the Rangers for 2 years, $25M. Justin Turner and Craig Kimbrel? They’re both still free agents but nothing has been hinted at them returning to the team.
If everything goes wrong for the Dodgers, they could possibly lose five starting players, which includes three starting pitchers and one of the best shortstops in baseball in a single offseason.
That’s almost unheard of!
Regardless, what’s making this offseason that much worse if the fact that the Dodgers are about as quick as David Attenborough in a 100-meter sprint (eh, probably not my bets analogy) in signing the best players from the free agent market. Already, Justin Verlander, Jacob deGrom, Edwin Diaz, Jose Abreu, Anthony Rizzo, and Zach Eflin have been signed by their rivals for the World Series.
Sure, they’re still big names left on the market, such as Aaron Judge, Carlos Rodon, Carlos Correa, and Xander Bogarts, but the Dodgers realistically have to sign at least two of these players to stay competitive in the NL with the people they have already lost.
We’ve already seen the Mets and Phillies sign massive names to bolster their chances of making it out of the NL and into the World Series, while the Padres, Cardinals, and Braves already have capable rosters that can easily beat this current Dodgers side.
If I was a Dodgers fan, I’d be extremely worried as not only as GM Brandon Gomes been slow in signing big names, but he has also allowed key players to walk away for free.
Maybe Gomes has everything under control, but I wouldn’t put any money on the Dodgers having another 111-win season given how things are currently going.
