Is it me or is making this movie into a franchise really unnecessary? With Avatar: The Way of the Water (Avatar 2) coming out soon and another three sequels scheduled, it seems like this story is needless getting made into a franchise.
When did James Cameron suddenly shift from his ‘there’ll never be an Avatar sequel’ mindset into his current ‘AVATAR WILL HAVE FOUR MORE MOVIES’ belief? Oh, the multi-billions of dollars that Avatar the Way of the Water and the subsequent sequel films will make for him, 20th Century Fox, and Disney. Yeah, that makes sense.
Money has always talked.
Still, the uniqueness and the understanding that the sole movie was a single tale made the original that much better and into the beloved classic that we all know today. It was a great tale of exploration, acceptance, compassion, love, and responsibility, inspiring many to see the better aspects of those who they would normally find disagreements with, or they would classify as ‘outsiders’.
The movie was a splendid allegory as to how we should respect and care for one another, regardless of our nationality or ethnicity, while also unveiling a fascinating, unique world that someone can get lost in for a few hours. In my humble opinion, Avatar really didn’t need this onslaught of new movies as it already told a near-perfect story, one that needs a sequel like a person needs a hammer to the forehead.
But that kind of thinking has been lost in the modern day of Hollywood as we are in the age of the franchise movies. And with Disney the one ultimately in charge, it should come as no surprise another classic one-off movie is getting exploited.
Now, of course I have tremendous respect for Disney and everything that it has achieved in the past with franchises such as Mickey Mouse, Pixar, the ‘Princess Movies (Frozen, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, etc.), and the MCU, but it has had a poor track record of late.
With Phase 4 of the MCU, the poor Willow spinoff series, the mishandling of the Star Wars Sequels, and many more all drawing the ire of their, respective, fanbases, it is clear that Disney has unfortunately put quantity and profit over quality and creativity. And I don’t see how this latest 5-movie plan franchise for Avatar will end up any differently with the current trajectory of the company.
I hope I’m wrong, but I see these Avatar movies burning out in quality and fan interest by Avatar 4 based on how everything else has gone with Disney. That’s just where the company is nowadays.
I guess we’ll see December 16th when Avatar: The Way of the Water comes out.
