Hurray, the legend is back! Ryan Renolds on his YouTube channel has just confirmed, with Hugh Jackman alongside him, that the Australian legend is going to be reprising his role as Wolverine in the new Deadpool 3 movie.
How did I not see this earlier? I’m a huge YouTube and X-Men guy and I never knew, until a few minutes ago, that Ryan Renolds not only released some new information about Deadpool 3 on his channel, but also revealed that Hugh Jackman WILL be reprising his role as Wolverine in the upcoming movie.
Of course, given the comedic genius that Reynolds is, he updated us all in the only way he knew how: a 1-minute sketch comedy of Hugh Jackman ‘begrudgingly accepting’ playing Wolverine again while on a visit at Reynold’s house.
I’ll admit, it was pretty funny. But I’m just shocked and extremely excited that Wolverine will be back on our screens as I thought the legendary character’s story was over with Logan. In fact, Hugh Jackman said as much during the promotional interviews and materials of Logan back in 2017.
Given the fact that (spoiler alert) Logan takes place in 2029, the furthest in the future X-Men/Marvel movie to date, and that Wolverine gives his life to save Laura and the other X-Men-cloned children, it seemed all but assured that any story involving Wolverine in the MCU would not only have to take place before 2029, but also it would have to do so without Hugh Jackman.
Logan was such a fantastic and bittersweet sendoff for one of the most legendary superheroes (and probably my favorite alongside Batman) that a little part of me was almost hoping for the James Mangold film to end up being Jackman’s final entry as Wolverine.
Yet, seeing that Jackman has paired up with Ryan Reynolds and his iconic character, Deadpool, for the newest Deadpool movie, I’ve put aside my reservations as this movie will undoubtably be a funny, lighthearted adventure that has no bearing (hopefully) on the final story of Wolverine told in Logan.
Deadpool 1 and 2 were both brilliant, hilarious, over-the-top movies that knew they were not serious, but also kept the audience engaged in a meaningful, (somewhat) relatable plot.
My greatest fear for Wolverine was that Marvel was going to ‘resurrect’ him with another actor and give him a sub-par, boring storyline in some sub-par, ‘Disney + original’ TV show that would have ruined all of the meaning and weight behind his sacrifice from Logan.
Thankfully, the creative directors behind Deadpool, which includes Ryan Reynolds, know that this movie franchise is solely a fun, light-hearted 2-hour experience that doesn’t need to intrude upon established character endings aside from poking fun at them though 4th wall humor.
And that’ why I’m super exited to see Hugh Jackman suit up as the Wolverine once again!
