Man, this guy is getting really annoying. Odell Beckham Jr. is continuing to market himself out like a door-to-door salesman and make headlines all over the NFL world, and it’s really starting to get annoying the longer it goes.
Is OBJ just an undercover sports agent at this point or does he still want to be a football player? He’s always in the headlines for saying something on Twitter after a Cowboys, Dolphins, 49ers, Bills, Giants, etc. game, though he has refused to commit to any one of these teams. Yes, I know he’s been hurt and is still recovering from an ACL tear, but his constant Twitter commentary and off-field nonsense is getting a little annoying at this point.
Of course, he has every right to have his say on NFL games and on sport in general, just like the rest of us. He’s not a paid employee of an NFL team, which comes with the freedom of being able to speak his mind on whatever he wishes to.
However, that doesn’t cover up the fact that his noncommittal, salesman-like attitude towards every single good, warm-climate NFL team has become more of a nuisance than a harmless curiosity.
It was funny to see OBJ going back and forth on Twitter with guys like Micah Parsons, Demarcus Lawarence, Matt Judon, etc. during Week 1-6 as the NFL landscape was morphing into the picture we see today. During that time, it made perfect sense for him to wait out and see what teams would be in a position to win the Super Bowl. Now, it’s just flat out annoying.
Perhaps I’m the only one who thinks this, but OBJ should honestly just stop talking on Twitter, enough with the thousands of flyouts to NFL facilities as if he’s the second coming of Jerry Rice, and just get down to business and sign with a team. We’re only seven weeks away from the playoffs and OBJ is still ‘prospecting’ team that he ‘might’ be interested in.
From the way he’s handled this situation, you’d be forgiven to think that he’s coming off a 200 reception, 2,000-yard, 25 TD, 1st Team All-Pro, Pro-Bowl, and Super Bowl win season. When, in reality, only one of those statements are true as Beckham was a role player on the Super Bowl winning Los Angeles Rams roster.
It was Cooper Kupp who was the Triple Crown and Super Bowl MVP-winning WR on the Rams last season, not OBJ.
In fact, OBJ had one of his worst NFL seasons to date last year as he only had 44 receptions for 537 yards and 5 touchdowns before he torn his ACL for a second time. Oh, and he’s also 30 years old.
So, forgive me, OBJ superfans, for saying that all of this hype that Beckham Jr. has garnered for himself these past twelve weeks is a little overblown. Sure, he’s still a great weapon to have on a contending team, but he’s not the Pro-Bowl wideout that he was during his days in New York and Cleveland.
He’s a 30-year-old wide receiver coming off one of the worst statistical seasons of his career and a second devastating ACL tear in the same knee.
And now with him getting kicked off Miami planes for sleeping or some other strange activity (I don’t know the truth behind that story), it’s well past time OBJ signs with a team and helps them win the Super Bowl this season.
Or, in other words, do his job as a football WR. Leave the salesman/sports agent career to after your playing career, OBJ.
